Orcjron loses one of its most success ful publishers and a man who has been closely identified with the prowth and development of the state for more than half a century. Those who were closely associated with him vouch for his integrity, his business ability and a pleasing personality; and the Dem- , ocrat joins with these friends in ex pressing sorrow at the decease of the founder of one of the metropolitan newspapers of the state. Mr. Pittock, however, is better ' known as a financier than as an edit or. He was the business brains of ! the newspaper organization which he I founded rather than the editorial chief. It was the late Harvey Scott ; who made the Oregonian a great newspaper and it has since been de- ! pendent upon the memory of this dis- J tinguished journalist for its prestige and place in the editorial sun. If the late owner had any weakness it waa his inability to sense genius and to attract to his paper an editor ial writer who eould take the place of the man who made the Oregonian a vital force m. the state. When Mr. Scott edited the Oregon ian it waa the editorial page that at tracted subscribers. Since Edgar B. Piper assumed charge it is the press dispatches, the local news and the prestige wrn during the time of Scott that makes the Oregonian a good bus iness investment. When Scott was in charge he thought first and then clothed his thoughts in diction which delighted men and women of intelli gence and perception. Piper writes ! but never thinks. He ia more par tisan than Scott but has none of his ability. He is sarcastic but lacks the flow of words to express his petty : personal dislikes in a manner that car- ! ries conviction. Scott was more or ' less of an aristocrat but he was a ; born Bourbon. He was no counterfeit ' ' gentleman. Piper has the veneer of a man of letters but it is of the su;r ficial, transparent, made-to-meaaure kind. Scott was exclusive, bat no one ever accused him of being a. snob. He was a staunch republican but at rare intervals had the saving grace of le ing able to detect ability in those who failed to accept his school of political philosophy. Piper is unwilling to make any auch concession. Scott wus a big man in a big town. Piper j little man, who by a queer tu- , the wheel of fortune has heea pilced in a high place. Our cash register records every transaction and in this way we have a record covering this period. This contest is open to everyone, whether you buy anything or not, the guess is free. A book will be in our Grocery Department for you to enter your name and guess; only one guess to each person and in Monday's paper we will state the correct number of transactions and the first three nearest guessers.
