ESTABLISHED IN 18 6 6 FRIDAI., HKrKMHK.lt 6. 1918 THE SAME OLD HOYS Unless some unforeseen renewal of hostilities arises or some failure of agreement over the peace terms which necessitates our maintaining a great army and navy, our armies should be fore lone be pretty well demobilised and our boys back, ready to resume their placea in the civilian life of out country. While this process of demobilization is alwaya a serious one, and fraught with considerable danger in any coun try, we have less to fear than those nations where military matters have always been of great importance, and whose men have now for more tiiar. four years been given over to arm) life. Our boys have made good soldiers; they took into tant business just the same aplendid energy and courage and enthusiasm which they put into theii daily pursuits here, and America may well be proud of her army. But while our men will come back perhaps a little f raver, all of they more responsible and all of them bet ter citizens because of their exper ience aa soldiers; nevertheless the time taken out of their livea for wai has been short, some of them having been gone only a few months, and to a very great extent they will come back toe boys who went away. The) have not been divorced from theit peaceful pursuits long enough to lose interest in them or to suffer the rest lessness which is too often the portion of the soldier returning after long ex perience in the field. This fact will greatly simplify the problems involved in the return of our armies and their absorption into in dustry. There is more danger of the country being disorganized than the boys whi retunr to it. They are the same old boys, onl; better, who are coming back; they ahould find the same old country, only better, waiting for them. (ir Holland reports the discovery of a natural gaa well. Must be a mistake Very likely a Limberger cheese bur ied there by some refugee from over the border. CONSERVATION As the country starts upon its era of conservation which is for the pur pose of releasing food supplies need ed abroad without incurring unneccs aary stringency at home, it might be well to consider again just what con servation means, and how it is best accomplished. In the first place, conservation die not mean either going without or noaraing. I rue conservation consists simply in the elimination of waste in the use of any commodity. There ahould be always in every household, regardless of emergency or international demands, a careful can vas of supplies on hand before any thing is bought.- Purchases should be made in accordance with a prepared program of consumption. There must be an understanding on the part of the purchaser of food val ues and their proper combination, to insire the purchase only of proper kinds and amounts. Food bought thus carefully, prepar ed carefully and without waste, means meals of the first grade at a minimum cost, which is to everybody's advan tage. The final step is the saving of ever; particle of usable food material aftcV the meal, and its future use in combin ations tastefully prepared. There is no hardship in such a pro gram. It is distinctly to the benefit of the household, and by the mere elimination of waste of food we shall set free quantities of food sufficient for the millions of hungry people abroad. It may be true, as certain champions of intemperance insist, "that ice crenm aodas are more deleterious to the sys tem that highballs." Still, at tome neutral philosopher remarks, "You never heard of a man standing till midnight with his foot on the brass rail of aodawater fountain." This morning I took a sightseein? ar, with a b ireh of sailors and ma rines, and w, were shown all of the principle parts of the city; we were -lot allowed to go into the White House as it is closed during: wartime. Sut we saw it from the outside and .he be.iutiful. spacious grounds ad enine it. We visited the pan-American Union building and our guide wk us all thru its interior. It cer tainly is most wonderful and beajti ful. We saw Washington's Mo-u-mcnt, the Po'.jmac river. We were in the srne.te chamber, house of representatives, supreme court room and I can now say that I have been in the President's Chair, for I sat in it whi!e the guide explained all about that particular room. It was the roam in which the President signs or vetoes all bills at the adjournment of each ongress. Well, folks, I could write forever and not tell all I would want to on my trip to Washington, so I wil let it wait until a later day. How is everything at home?
