November 13. ISIS FEEDING THE MULTITUDE Fighting in this war is over, but there is one thine which is bojnd to keep on indefinitely, and that is the demand upon the United States for food supplies of all kinds for the hun gry folks across the sea. War has pone, but hunger will re main. Even with peace restored, it is man ifestly impossible for countries devas tated by war and suffering from ter rific losses of manpower immediately to resume the adequate production of food. The condition of the land itself would prevent, and furthermore, what men remain will be needed for the re construction ' of cities, highways and all sons of public work, rlt will be years before conditions can be estab lished in these ravaged countries, in suring them against food shortage. For four years our hungry allies abroad have cried to us for food and have not cried in vain; for years to come we shall hear the same appeal and must answer with unabated gen erosity. In addition to this, the Unit ed States, with the other nations rep resented in the supreme war council, has agreed to cooperate with Bulgar ia, Turkey, Germany and Austria in feeding their starving civilian popula tions. It is true that the cessation of hos tilities has released much tonnage and renders accesible large quanties of supplies, but it is still mainly from the United States that the bulk of the food will have to come. This clearlv means that we are in no way released from the obligations of economy and care in the administration of our food stuffs at home. Every household and every dealer must continue to maintain those stan dards of conservation which have not only enabled us to help abroad but have saved us from want ourselves. The pessimistic people who kept saying that "things are going to be just the same after the war. Kaiser and all, are now maintaining a dis creet silence. "Kaiser" is the same word as "czar." Both are derived from "Cae sar," which was the title of the old Roman emperors, taken from the first of them, Julius. Wilhelm is therefore the last of the Caesars. A lot of troops of various national ities are soon going to have the tfme of their young lives garrisoning Germany. People who wondered what the American army was doing the last few weeks have now found out. It's always a waste of time to be doubtful or pessimistic about America. The war-drunk nation has had a fine time smashing things. Now it must pay. And the prospect is very sober ing. SCIO HAS A BIG PEACE DEMONSTRATION SCIO, Nov. 13. Special.
