ALLIANCE WITH ALL President Wilson, in his New York speech last week, indicated in a few convincing words the natural transi. tion from our' policy of isolation to full participation in world politics. There are some oldfashioned Amer icans who are still uneasy about Vur entering into a league of powers, even for so beneficent a purpose pre serving world-peace. To them the President says: We still read Washington's im mortal warning against 'entangling aliances' with full comprehension ani an answering purpose. But only spe cial and limited alliances entangle; and we recognize and accept 'the du ties of a new day, in which we are permitted to hope for a general al liance which will avoid entanglements and clear the air of the world for common understandings and the main tenance of common rights." That is to say, while an alliance with one nation or one group of na tions' would be 'entangling,' an alli ance with all would be free from en tanglements, because it would remove the very perils that Washington fear ed. And that is what we are aiming at We want all the nations in the world peace federation. We even want Ger many in it she must come in, whe ther she wants to or not, so that we can keep an eye on her. Such a lib erating alliance with all the nations possessing power for good or evil in world affairs is what we are fighting for, and what we expect to obtain in the great peace conference that will come when our enemies surrender. , 4 TRAITOR MALIXOFF German . statesmen and editors greeted Premier Malinoffs request for an armistice with the furious demand that Malinoff be hanged as a traitor. This is a most curious revelation of Prussian mentality. Traitor to whom? Traitor to what? There is no evidence, in current newt reports, that Malinoff acted contrary to the wishes of his own nation or govern ment. There is no question, then, of treason against Bulgaria. ' If there is any treason involved in this perfectly natural attempt of the Bulgarian premier to save his coun try out of the impending wreck, it ' must be treason to Prussia. And how can a statesman of one self-governing country be a traitor to any other country ? The answer is, of course, that the rulers of the German Empire, and the underlings who ape their opinions, re gard Austria-Hungary, Bulgary and Turkey as vassals of Germany, nom inally free but actually provinces of their Empire. Thus it is unpardon able audacity, insolence and insubord ination for any of their allies to take any important war action without their consent. The Prussian supermen will soon get over that. Their evil alliance falling to pieces before their eyes. Their comrades in crime see the im pending doom of Prussianism, and refuse to "hold the bag."
