OCTOBER 1. 191 MOLDING AMERICANS In one army division in tort Kil-y Tex- there ar men born in England Scotland, Wales Ireland, Canada, Aus tralia, Norwal, Holland, Serbia, spai Sweden, Turkey, Bohemia. Hungary Germany, Luxembourg, Montenegro Greece, Italy, Lichtenstcin, Belgium Bulgaria, France, Russia, Portugal Guatemala, Honduras, Denmark, Ru mania and Switzerland. That division ia a little more mixed than usual, but almost every unit w send to France is a remarkable racial combination. We find, nevertheless, that our friends on the other side have Utile to aay about the varied elements tha make up our army. They hardly no tice th differences. They speak ai ways of our soldiers as if they were all alike, all of one type. And so they are, broadly speakin.r For whether an immigrant has been affected jnuch or little by the melting pot of American life in nopmal times the army inevitably molds him to the common type and puts on him the stamp of "American." We may safely assume that when these men of 30 races go into battle, they will fight as one race, and will b indistinguishable in spirit and ac tion from the most "native" division in France. . 1 OCR SACRIFICES REPAID German prisoners are said to be much impressed by the fact that their American captors are eating white bread on the battle front In connec tion with that fact the federal food administration announces that even requirement for floor, both for domes tic and overseas consumption, is be ing met, that the supply of flour fo our soldiers Is 100 per cent abundant everywhere along the line. One of the reasons why our soldiers are given pure wheat flour unmixed with substitutes is that field bakers must work swiftly and have no time to experiment with mixtures. What ever the reasons, civilians are proud to know that their willing use of sub stitutes on this side of tho water is giving the boys over there the verv best. Our other patriotic efforts are pro ductive of just as satisfactory results. For the few things we are asked to give up, for the economies we prac tise and the Liberty Bonds and Thrift Stamps we buy, we are repaid many times over by the spirit of our fight ing men and the success they are win ning on land and sea. r- FOCH'S PROGRAM . The most luminous and convincing forecast of allied military plans that we happen to have seen is credited to Marshal Koch. It is quite in keeping with Foch's reputation for taciturnity that he achieved this masterpiece without uttering a word. It is said that Balfour, the British foreign secretary, when visiting France aome time ago, asked Foch what he was going to do to the Ger mans. The generalissimo silently doubled his right fist and landed vig orously on an imaginary jay. Then he did the same thing with his left fist Next he kicked out with his right foot, then with his left. That was all. It was enough. Balfour understood, and now the world understands. First orously on an imaginary jaw. Then he kicks him out. That pantomime ought to go down in history.
