This was made known this morning when the mayor authorized the statement that he would permit the uae of his name a a candidate at the fall election. "Some time ago," said the Mayor, "1 stated that the question of whether or not I would become a candidate would depend upon whether or not there appeared to be a general de. nuind upon the part of the people that I make the race. Burnett Writes Wife That the members of Battery C, 69th company, who left Fort Stevens en rout for France some weeks ago. have safely arrived in Europe, is in dicated by the fact that Mrs. Burnett this morning received a letter from her husband, R. L. Burnett, stating that he ha safely arrived in France. W. W. Crawford also received word from his son, Geo. Crawford, who is with the same company. There were several Albany boys in this company and while the Demo crat has been unable to obtain all of their names, the following are said to be included in the list: R. L. Burnett. Richard Parker, Sergeant Conn. Ser geant Elton Gildow, Ralph Bilyeu and Geo. Crawford. SCIO PIONEER IS CALLED BYDEATH Jack Bilyeu Passes Away After Illness of One Hour Word was received here this morn ing of the sudden death of Jack Bil yeu. well-known pioneer resident of the Scio distrk-t. The deceased suffered a stroke of paralysis some months ago but waa ill only an hour before the end came. He was 67 years of age and leaves a wife and one daughter in Scio, five brothers, M. E. Bilyeu of Albany, Wid Bilyeu of Calina, Washington, Hub Bilyeu of Scio, Peter Bilyeu of Ore gon City, Robert Bilyeu of Halsey, and four sisters, Mrs. C. C. Jackson and Mrs. Nemchic of Halsey and sister in Canada and one in Oregon City to mourn- his loss. . The funeral arrangements have not been made at the hour of going to press. Questionnaires to Be Sent in Ten Days The local board has received instruc tions to send the questionnaires first to the men between the ages of 19 and 36 years of age and from pres ent indications these will be mailed out within the next ten days. The registered men have seven days which to fill out the questionnaire and return it to the draft board. Men be tween the ages of 19 and 36 will be called first. Johnson Caae Set The case of the state of Oregon vs. Herbert Johnson, charged with steal ing a bicycle, is set for 1:30 Monday in the juvenile court. WAR DEPARTMENT WANTS MAPS OF ENEMY TERRITORY The war department desires photo graphs, drawings and descriptions of bridges, buildings, towns and locali ties now occupied by the German for ces in France, Belgium and Luxem bourg, and likewise in that part of Germany lying west of the line run ning north and south thru Hamburg. In accordance with instructions from the war department and the council of national defense, w are asked to secure if possible materials it this character. A large quantity of material is desired and may be aent without sorting or without any at tempt to avoid duplication. It will not be practicable to return the material to the contributors.
