That it could , Dot succeed in its campaign of fright- fulness with the little ships is just . aoe mora detail in England's glorious war record. " The naval officer who reported the engagement concluded his official Statement with these words: "This was a fisherman's fight, and without doubt they put up a right 'stout one. I deem it an honor to have been in command of them." Such are the British fishermen. We have faith that our own fishermen ' possess the same spirit. They, too, love the aea and will uphold its tra ditions of honor. ,. . : INCREASE IN TRAVEL It was generally believed that one result of the increase in railroad pas senger fares effective June 10th. aside from the greater revenues, was the expected decrease in travel. Cars were needed for troop movements, en gines were needed to haul important freight. By discouraging passenger traffic the three-cent per mile fare would automatically release those cars . and engines for the necessary work. . It haa not worked out exactly that way. The railroad reports ahow larger passenger revenues over and above the natural increase due to the fare raise. This means actual traf fic increase. " Undoubtedly many people are trav eling today who never traveled before. Relatives and friends in great num bers have visited soldiers in the train ing camps. Vacationists who former ly took long trips to other countries have sought humbler trips nearer home, but they have traveled some- where. The East and South and Mid dle West have been the scenes of the greatest amount of railroad journeying- .. The railroad administration is said to be setting on foot investigations looking , toward the relief of conges tion on passenger trains in those sec tions. . The .report furnishes interesting comment on national prosperity. Un necessary ,. traveling, like all other forms .of waste and extravagance, I should, -be eliminated. .Nevertheless, it is pleasant to note that when trav eling, roust, be done people have the . funds and willingness to spend them -in spite of high fares and war taxes. In organizing the military activities of the country, the Government has had the effective cooperation of the Bell Telephone System, which even in peace times reached 70,000 communities and now extends to the head quarters of every Army Department and Naval District in the United States.
