AUGUST 28, 1918 MAGYARS AND JUGOSLAVS Martial law haa gone into effect throughout Austria-Hungary. nd dispatches frankly credit the action to the Magyar fear of Jugoslav re venge for centuriea of oppression. The Magyara hold more than the balance- of power in the dual monarchy now, and Germane and German-Austrians alike are glad to conciliate the land holding aristocracy which enjoys com plete political control in Hungary. The Magyara have reason to be worried, for their offenses against - the Slav races within their borders have been surpassed in systematic brutality only by the Prussian effort to Germanise Poland. They have pro tected vehemently against the Aus trian effort to Germanize Hungarians, but their dread of Germanization has ' never led them to relax their efforts to Magyarixe their Slav subject peo ples. . And, because the Magyar race ia an able one, and rich in capable publicists, for a dozen decades the liberty-loving peoples of the world have wasted sympathy upon them, in ignorance of the fata of the Slovaks and Slovenes, Roumans, Serbs and Croats who suffered under their yoke.' For a full half century the Magyars have been cloaer to the powers that rule Germany than even the Haps- burgs. They have played the German gam against the South Slavs in re turn for a guaranteed hegemony Hungary, and it was their greatest statesman, Andrassy, rather than an Austrian, who was chief aid and right- hand man to Bismarck. Since the great war began the Hun garians have not neglected to exert their power. They have compelled Germany and Austria to rearrange nlan after military plan to safeguard Hungarian soil, have exerted a major influence upon the strategy of the Central Powers in the Balkans and on the Western Front. This latest re pressive measure is of their asking, and its purpose is obvious. ' ' Austria is weary of war and eager for any kind of peace. The Magyars are war weary, too, but they want a Magyar peace which will leave them masters of the destinies of millions of Slovaks, Roumans and Jugoslavs. The Magyar aristocracy is, today, the chief instrument of Prussian junkerdom in the dual monarchy. It plays a char acteristically Prussian, and Magyar, game. MORE SHIPS RELEASED "Dutch fleet is to bring sugar," an nounces a news dispatch, and a sweet toothed nation pauses a fraction of time in its war work to look pleased and interested. Forty Dutch ships, totaling about 100,000 tons, have been lying idle in harbors of the Dutch East Indies. A sugar crop of 50,000 to 100,000 tons haa been tied up for lack of ships in these same islands. There are other . cargoes such as tin and quinine, great ly needed In this country, that have been waiting some kind of arrange ment for transportation. Now that an informal agreement has been reached between the two countries, the ships will begin to move and there will be a little more available sugar in this part of the world. The United States will take all the sugar they can ship us. In return We will send them whatever normal exports are permitted by the allied war program. Every little helps. Ships are being built at an amazing rate both in Eng land and In America. Nevertheless, every ton of shipping that can be made available by releasing warbound fleets Is needed. Modern war conditions demand that our armies mt have behind them na tional solidarity, the coordination of all the vast activities nd an indus trial army many times greater than the Nation's fighting forces. The Nation's capital is linked with all these varied activities by the toll and long distance lines of the Bell System. Thousands of miles of special wire systems have been turned over to the Government for its exclusive use. Switchboards in the Government departments at Washington have been enlarged and new onea installed. Right of way is given to Govern ment business over all commercial lines, so that the Government chiefs may keep in constant touch with every phase of the Nation's great task and direct its progress intelligently and effectively. In organizing the military activities of the country, the Government has had the effective cooperation of the Bell Telephone System, which even in peace times reached 70,000 communities and now extends to the head quarters of every Army Department and Naval District in the United States. They have awn-boarded the Pacific Highway, on both sides of the river, between Eugene and Portland. The signs are nifty little boards in five 'colors, showing the highway direction ! at one end and a fine picture of the Multnomah hotel on the other. Oeorge Chambers, secretary for the Oregon Motor Association, has just passed through the valley and it was he who put up the signs. He says the boards were furnished by the hotel people at a cost of JMO, and that Hau- ser paid half his traveling expenses. Chambers has been trying for years to get the money for this work, and for as many years the travelling pul- lie haa been cussing Oregon. The ver bal fireworks are now over aa fur as the Wilamette valley is concerned. A blind man could now follow the Paci fic highway.
