JISE 11, 1918 JOLLYING THEM ALONG I I From a late issue of the esteemed, semi-official and veracious Cologne Gazette we learn that "the present strength of the American troops i France does not exceed 300,000 men. Aso that these few were sent in the summer and fall of last year, and "since then the transportation of men has practically ceased, owing to the ever-increasing lack of tonnage." Al so that there is a woeful lack of uni forms, ammunition and other war ma terials, and our expeditionary forces are almost entirely dependent on sup plies furnished by France. Our troops here at home are ir wretched plight. There is little cloth ing for them. Less than 50 per cent of the men have proper shoes. "So It happens that only half of the men can be sent out for training at one time. On their return, the others will put on their boots.' The civilian population is still worse off. "Throughout the United States a great shortage in food supplies has prevailed since November of last year. conditions in the eastern part of the country being such as to come close to a famine.' AU this, of course, is good news to the Germans. And it's just as good news to us. We couldnt ask for any ., thing better. If the German govern ment and press want to jolly along the war-weary German people that way, let them! The shock when the truth strikes them will be all the more w overwhelming. FARMING EFFICIENCY There's generally more than one way to do a thing. Most of us don t know how much ingenuity we've got. and how much work we can get done just by using our brains, until we're flat up against it. This bit of philosophy is inspired bv a casual item sent out by the depart ment of agriculture, telling how one fanner in Indiana has met the farm labor shortage. He had a big farm to work and no men to help him. He ' hadnt any tractor and hadn't anv prospect of getting one in time for the spring sowing. But he had plentv of horses. Well, neighbors who happened to pass along that way were soon edified : by the sight of that Hoosier driving a team of six horses hitched to a disc plow, and leading three horses draw- . ing a harrow. "He was working nine horses and two modern farming im plements, and doing the work of sev eral men andteams under the old sys tem of farming." And what he has done almost anv man could do, in his own work. AUCTION SALE There will be a Red Cross auction sale in front of the Red Cross store on , Saturday, June 15th, at 3 p. m.
