Under government management they re run primarily for service. Recent revolutionary acta of the railroad administration have come from thia changed view. The road need new equipment and construction, and to provide it the government leta . them have nearly a billion dollara three timet aa much aa they have lately been apending for auch purpot- ntA mauu ian't civ,,,, ttAKWr but lent. The government handa over the cash because it can borrow money . and the roads cant. The spending of roads will now buy what they need. The discharge of all the railroad preaidenta was a more dra.tu- ;:td spectacular move. Most of the president-managers had been trying to co operate loyally with the federal gov ernment. But a few of them had ig nored federal orders, or obeyed re luctantly. Others had been unable to grasp the new order of things, to get the new viewpoint. And it was de sirable, anyhow, that all the lines anould be operated by practical rail road managers rather than men train- ed primarily as financiers. So Direct or McAdoo made a clean sweep. Many of the former presidents will be re- 1; i n i;nu however, will now be run presumably ' by men who know their business and are in harmony with the new system. The big fact is that there is now only one railroad in the United States, and it is a military railroad. The va rious .branches have got to obey the director as army divisions obey their commander'. After the war is won, if the railroads and the nation want to return to the old order, the system will i be unscrambled and denationalized. For the present, everybody concerned may as well recognize that we have a railroad dictatorship, and must have it while the war lasts. CREATIVE THRIFT Economy is a fine thing. Neverthe less the best way to get ahead is to think less about saving and more about earning. It's the positive thought, the creative attitude, that counts most. What we need, as individuals and as a nation, in order to bear oar war burdens, is to increase our earning power, to work harder and more in telligently, to produce more.
