Freedom for each state to think and act for itself without subservience to the central government was the ideal which animated the South in the Civil War. The idea underneath it has proved to be mistaken. That is, the intellectual and practical side of the working out of that particular idea - has been proven unwise. But the emo tional ideal was no less worthy. Deliverance of the oppressed was what urged on the federal forces. The preservation of a union of states all working together, in place of separ ata governments which might at anv time arm against each other like the states of Europe, was the other big hope, since realized. In the Spanish War deliverance of the oppressed was again the leading motive. And the idea of keeping the American continent safe from foreign aggression, united in spirit for the common safety, marched with the idea of deliverance. Today, for the first time since the great war began, we honor Americans who have fallen in American legions fighting for democracy. Again" we fight for the deliverance of oppressed peoples. Again we fight that manv nations shall be united in spirit for the common safety instead of armed against each other. The Civil War has long passed into history. Both sjdes speak with a common understanding of the real victories won by its long struggle. Fifty years from now, how shall we apeak of this war? Surely we can not let it then be said that the Amer ican people, because of lack of ear nestness, lack of self-sacrifice, allow ed their dead to die in vain. As near as we can fathom the Irish situation, Ireland is ag'in Germany, but wants to see England licked. . LIFE AND FORTUNE We are accustomed to hearing and repeating that "we have staked our lives and fortunes on this war." Most of us believe it, in a general way. without going into particulars. But Linn F Hanson of Wayne, Neb., took it literally. When Hanson made ap his mind that the war was a good war, and his war, he proceeded to get into it. He did a complete job. First he sold his farm, and all his other property. Then he took the money and bought $5,500 worth of Liberty Bonds, and gave $3, 500 to the Red Cross and the rest. $1,000, to his church. Then he en listed in the army. It was such a fine, big thing to do that President Wilson, hearing about it, wrote Hanson a letter expressing his admiration of the spirit which prompted him to "throw in his for tunes entirely and unreservedly with the great country we all love and seek to serve." ' We cant all be Hansons. And it isn't desirable that we should be. Most of us have to stay at home and do our regular work, to keep the war ma chinery running. But there are mightv few of us who couldn't throw in more of our life and fortune than we've yet done. Your Gift Must be worthy to represent your regard for the graduate who is dear to you. The most pleasing gift is that which has the quality of permanence, and carries with it the sweetest sen timent. Perhaps we may heln you in selecting the gift you want to give. . E. C.
