SWEEPING BACK THE SEA Sine oid King Canute ordered back the incoming tide, there has probably been no more impressive spectacle of futile protest than the action of the anti-suffragista of New York state. They are organising a campaign for the repeal of the suffrage provision placed in the state constitution last fall by a majority vote of 102,000. It was the men who gave New York women the ballot. There is no indi cation that the men, once convinced that democracy means equal auffraire. have changed their minds about it The antis hope, apparently, that the women themselves will renounce their new right, in sufficient numbers to undo the work of enfranchisement. What basis t'icy have for their hope is not apparent. There happens to be no case in recorded history of an) race or any nation or any political oi social group which, once given full citizenship rights, has voluntarily re nou.ii' id Ihei.i. And there's probabl) as much human nature in New Yori state today as there has ever been anywhere. King Canute was really ahead of those antis. He wss only putting on a show to shame his flatterers. He knew the tide wouldn't roll back when be told it to. THE AMERICAN CREED It's a pretty good creed that turned up in a prise contest in Baltimore worth all of the $1,000 that the city paid for it. It is called "The Amer : r I " i : . . van vimi) b i lu . t . c u . "I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag and to defend it against all enemies." It's a good test of Americanism. It can readily be applied to our own acts and words, and those of other people. By it any public act or utterance can be judged. If any man says he is an American, and behaves inconsistently with this creed, he is lying. Only a pro-German or a misin formed American will scoff st th ef forts of th government to conserve the food supply of the nstion.
