CUTTING OUT LUXURIES We're been doing moderately well with the elimination of luxuries, judg ing from the 1917 import figures. Our foreign purchases of such commod ities as diamonds, pearls, lsces plush es, ribbons, hats, bonnets, feathers gloves, cosmetics, olive oil, fsncj cheese and confectionery have fallen off 20 to 60 per cent compared with the previous year. And the difference la really greater than that, because these percentages are not based on the actual quantity of goods, but on the prices paid for them, which were higher last year than the year before There is a notable reduction in li quor imports, a matter for which the general public can take no special credit, seeing that it was accomplish ed chiefly by a federal order forbid ding such importations. More sur prising is the fact that we imported only half as much chicle as usual. Can it be that we are actually denying our selves chewing gum? If so, the wo men deserve more credit for self-sacrifice than the men, for the latter have certainly not given up their equivalent vice. We imported far more tobacco, cigars, cigarets and cig aret paper last year than the year before. We're willing to economize all right, but not on smoking. Brownsville Is Scene of Parent-Teacher Meet A parent-teachers' institute is in progress today at Brownsville. Mrs. Ida Maxwell Cummings left this morning to attend the meeting and will be on the program. Other well-known speakers are Cir cuit Judge G. G. Bingham, of Salem; Prof. 1. B. Horner, CorvaHis; Prof. Knight, Tangent; Frank Maxwell, of Halsey. Pomona Grange Is in Session Today The Linn County Pomona Grange is holding an all-day session at Grand Prairie Grange hall today. Rev. G. H. Bennett and Professor Boetticher went out this morning and are scheduled to speak on Liberty bonds at the morning or afternoon session. W. H.
