FALLING AMONG DECENT MEN The German sailors who were res cued when the V. S. Destroyers Fan ning and Nicholson sank their U-hoat . must have had the surprise of their lives. V.hen they poured out of tile sinking submarine like rats, they could have hardly expected any other fate than drowning. - ' It was doubtless their own custom. if they had been long engaged in the German naval service, to let crews drown when they sank ships even noncomhatant crews, whose lives b the civilized sea cede are sacred. It -would surely not have surprised there. if the American destroyers had train ed guns on them as they struggled, in the water, and sent them under with puffs of shrapnel. That is pre cisely what the ' L'-boats have done over and over again to the struggling crews and passengers of torpedoed ships. But there were no pot shots at the drowning German assassins. There were no jeering faces peering over the rail of the victorious warships to giuai gtcr mtif uuj. ihiicau, wic Yankee sailors jumped into the sea and saved the Germans at the risk ot their own lives. They took them - aboard and gave thm warm, dry clothing, sandwiches and hot coffee. 'Most of the Germans were exhaust ed when brought aboard. But in an hour or two they were singing. What were they singing? Could it lave been. "DeutachlasukUeiicr A I Us" or tome. ."Hymn -ai aiaie.T f The ucial accounts do not tell. But ths chances are that it wasn't anything Junkerish or bloodthirsty. We hope, at any rate, that it was some kindly, human song, in recognition of the fact that the sea-assassins had found themselves precipitated among decent human beings, and by the contagion of decency and honor had .had -their own manhood restored. If so, thein was the gain. The whole German navy could well afford to be ship wrecked and half-drowned and taken by the enemy for the sake of such an awakening. EVERYBODY BELONGS It is doubtful whether any organ ization in the history of the world was ever able to boat to great a membership as the American Red Cross since its recent cam;nitfn. Six teen, million new names were added to its rolls, making a total of 20,0 0, 000. That total, if we accept the usual estimate of five persons to a family, meant as many Red Cross members as there are families in the United States. In many cases two or more ' persons were enrolled from the saint family. These cases, however, are the exception rather than the rule. The big majority of "joiners" have been one to a family. It is almost literally true, thrrcf'e, that the 'American people, the whole lOn.OUO,- WIO of us, have joined the Red Cross in a body, by family representation. Thit furnishes the finest proof yet given of our national unanimity with respect to the war. It justifies the remark of Henry P. Davidson, chair man of the national war council, that "the Red iCrosj is itlie Mobilized heart and spirit of the whole Ameri can people." There it a peculiar fitness in our belonging to it, because it to well represents in its activity what we as a nation are, broadly speaking. Irying to do in the war at a whole. The Red Crost work is humanitarian. Our war is likewise humanitarian, meant for tfir "healing of the na tions" as the Red Cross help is meant for the healing of those hurt in the struggle.. ' The writer adds that it is only fail to say that these things were the exceptions to the usual rule of sen sible generosity, but the exceptions occurred in numbert worth w-riting about.
