PRIZES IN GUESSING CONTEST TO BE ANNOUNCED An interesting guessing contest ha' been on at Hamilton's store from December first to the 15th, and now the judge are busy figuring up who is the winner. The prize winners will be announced in the windows of the store the evening of December 20th. There will not only he one first prize, but 12. and the 12 lucky girls who write the best letters of 101 words giving the best reasons "Why I Should Trade at Hamilton's" will be made happy with the pretty gifts Over 2O0 letters have been received anil the judges are trying hard to de cide which to select. The judges are Mrs. A. C. Schmitt. Mrs. Roy Parker and Mrs. C. B. Winn. JOHN SMITH DIED THIS MORNING Well Known Resident of Sun rise Called to Last Raward After Lingering Unless. Mrs. Ann Mary Smith, wife of John Smith of Sunri.c, passed away at her home in Sunrise this morning shortly before 7 o'clock. The deceased had been lo i'urtland lo consult a specialist in regard to her physical condition but returned more than a month ago without ob taining any relief. Ann Mary Smith was burn in Ger many but came to this country w.hen a young girl and was later united in marriage with John Smith. They came to Oregon in l'X) and tve since resided in Linn county. The funeral will be held Friday af ternoon at 2 p. m. HOME GUAR8S TO HAVE NEW ORGANIZATION The drill organization of the Home Guards will probably be augmented y the addition of more than 1W boys. bout 3s boys, member of J. A. Howard's Sunday school class, have been dr-llintf with the Home Guards. and it was suggested that they have a separate ni&ht tor drill. They say that they can bring in more than IUU boys for the class. They will meet at the armory at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon to talk over the plan and to select a drill night. Joe Frum may be called to drill the boys. ST. JOHNS L0D6E HOLDS ANNUAL ELECTION St. Johns Lodge So. 17, A. F. & A. M., held its annual election last night. Following the election the new officers were installed. Willard L. Marks, past grand chan ellor and one of the most prominent members of the Knights of Pythias, has attained the highest local office in the Blue LoJge of Masonry and will head that organization during the coming year, as worshipful mas ter. The other officers elected were: Joe D. Gilbert, S. W.: Judge P. R. Kelly, J. W; E. D. Cusick. treasurer: Ed Washburn, secretary; Charles H. Cusick and John R. Penland. trustees. The appointive officers will be nam ed later. MASONS WILL CELEBRATE ST. JOHNS DAY Members oi the Masonic lodie will hold their annual celebration of St. Johns Day, in the Masonic Temple on Thursday evening, December 27. At a recent meeting the wbeatmen discussed formation of company to handle these matters, and purchase of two local nulls is said to have been discussed, together with acquisition of water rights fot power generation. Coos county is second with J)0, or 51 per cent. Both have a 75jO quota. S Sixteen counties average 27 per cent. Outside of Portland the state average is 16 per cent. Judge Henry McGinn of Port land last night delivered a stirring appeal to the people of Albany at a mass meeting held at the armory. The meeting was called to order by Dr. W. H. Davis, who introduced the speaker and presided during the meeting. Judge McGinn is an able speaker and his address was pronounced a masterpiece both from an oratorioal .ind patriotic viewpoint. The campaign in Albany and Linn county is progressing in splendid hape. Tangent sent in a report this afternoon in which it was stated that 143 new members have been obtained in less than two days. F. M. Mitchell and G. B. Birch canvassed . the N'orthwest corner of Price precinct and obtained 41 new members. Federal mediators issued a statement criticizing the Crown-Willamette Pa per company's refusal to accept its mediation offer, and said that this "is at variance with the spirit of inilus, try." They declared the strikers sub mitted their side with an unreserved offer to abide by the commission. The mills are still guarded.
