SEPTEMBER 21. 1917 A HOMING DIPLOMAT The sympathy of a critical but not unkindly world goes with Count Lux burg, the German charge d'affaires at Buenos Aires, as he shake the dust of indignant Argentina from his Heel Luxburg has to go, because he call ed the Argentine secrtary of state an ass and suggested that his gove-n ment dispose of Argentine shipping by the Kultur rule of "$purlo ver senkt" leaving no trace. Rut where can he go. The natural presumption is that he will go home. There is no weleome for him anywhere else. But how can he get there? Argentina doesn't feel like lending him a warship. He will presumably have to take passage on a liner or freighter. The allies will honor his passport and make no se rious trouble for him, in pursuance of the diplomatic courtesy which still prevails outside of Germany. But that doesn't guarantee him a safe passage. He bas to run the gauntlet of the very U-boats which have been sinking Argentine merchantmen, and to whose tender mercies he wished to consign the rest of the Argentine shipping Those tender U-boats sink everything at sight, without reading passenger lists. It must be a cheerful thought to Luxburg. as be fares homeward dand ling his diplomatic tin can behind him. that he himself may be "spurlos versenkt.' "VICTORY- WAR SLOGAN OP BUSINESS MEN ATLANTIC CITY. Sept 20. (U P.) With "victory" as their slogan. American business men here today convened for the third day of their first war convention. Leaders in I nance, trades and industry, in the greatest gathering of its kind ever held in this country, met to discuss their war duties and to prepare for readjustments after the world strug gle ends. President Wilson in person, or a message from him through one o his cabinet members, will be an out standing feature. Prices, priorities, industrial rela tions, diplomatic problems the whole sweep of war's intricate questions will be treated in addresses by the country's war chiefs and distinguished foreign representatives. The conven tion was called by the Chamber oi Commerce of the United States. When the meetings close on Fri day, America's business men will be in step with the country's march against autocracy, "showing the whole world," said President R. G. Rhett. Charlestown, S. C, "in what spirit and with what determination business faces the task ahead." What may be done to control pri ces and profits will be one of the biggest problems before the business men. Secretary of War Baker, Sec retary of Interior Lane, Food Admin istrator Herbert C. H oover and Chairman Frank A. Scott of the War Industries Board, who are on the program, may touch on the price question. They will appeal for co operation in war work. President Rhett's message on pri vate interests during the war is: "Ev ery business man. firm or corpoar tion must subordinate individual in terests to the common cause. This they are ready to do, all that is need ed Is direction. Secretary Elliot H. Goodwin stat ed that the Chamber of Commerce had gone flatly on record against war profiteering. "It must not be over looked, however," he said, "that bus iness cannot live without profit. That is the rule of the game. Patriotic business men are perfectly ready to work on another basis so long as they can live, but they must have clearly indicated what the new basis will bt Special interest is show n in thv .id drr of Hons Baklimrtictt. Rus.suu ambassador, and of Lord MofthdWf, chairman British Mission, who are on the program Among prominent business men who will be IsMfd b the contention are A. C Bcdfod, pres ident of Standard Oil. and George M. Re nobis. Chicago banker. The discussion of readjustments to follow the war w ill deal with the . ourse ot prices, the return ot the army into cml and industrial life and the new international relation of the I'nited State. Under w .i s and means by w hich I usiness may most readily adjust it elf to war conditions will COON dil cussion ol industries not ptttoHs.1 to war. Food conservation, labor trouh les and foreign trade also ill DC taken up. How business may render great ei service in winning the war will be a major topic throughout the con vent ion. "The Chamber's KxCCttHl C committee." said President Rhett. "believes that the time has arrived when the business men of t!ie nation should see what they may do to de velop greater efficiency and render greater service in carrying the war to a quick and succes-ful COWchMSOl " HEART OF LATE MAD KING OTTO PLACED IN IRON URN LON'DOV.
