THURSDAY, SEPT. 13. 1917. OUR GERMAN PRESS The Cm mill laming.! press ol the United States at last shows signs of getting on the job and interpret ing America truly to the people ot Germany. T:iis is a task for which it has all along been well fitted and strategically placed, -but which it has hitherto refused. The Gernun-Anicncan editors seem to have seen a light since the Presi dent's reply to the Pope. They are beginning to admit that the German government is not wholly perfect and the German people are not wholly free and that there are some thing which despised America can teach the Fatherland. They now reveal the novel spectacle of actually support ing the American government, in a mild sort of way, and offering gentle and hesitant advice to Berlin. In a recent issue of the New York-Staat-Zeitung, hitherto one ot the moat anti-American of our Teutonic publications, there is a fine letter from a New Jersey citizen named Lehr bach. He refers to the possibility of the German people obtaining an early and lasting peace by changing the constitution of the empire. "To accomplish this," he remarks, "the Kaiser and the Bundesrat must aurrender to the Reichstag the sole power they now possess of declaring war, and concede to the people uni versal suffrage." It they refuse these concessions, the says, "the people, aupported by the rank and file ai the army, would be justified in depos ing the Kaiser and establishing a republic" There is provocation for such re forms, quite aside from their utility as bait for an honorable peace. The Bundesrat, the supreme council of the federated German states, is ab solutely controlled by the Kaiser. The Reichstag is little more than a debating society, chosen by a gerry mandering system that gives the Prussian land-owners nearly all the representation and disfranchises most of the industrial workers. Commenting on this letter, the Staats-Zcitung which used to insist that there was more liberty and bet ter political representation in Ger many than in America says: "Herr Lehrbach is no; speaking his own sentiments alone," and adds that all Germans, in the Fatherland and else where, should pray for changes that will "bring Germany into harmony with the political convictions of oth er advanced nations." If our German press is turning American, we are heartily glad of it. That press has much to answer for. It might have prevented the war be-'. twecn America if it had spoken the truth to Germany two years ago, or a year ago. It may yet redeem itself and serve the cause of Americanism and humanity if it takes full advant age fo its present opportunity. MISFITS By F. P. Nutting The city without a few former resi dents of Albany would be a poor place for a home. Like other prosper ous Northwestern cities I found Wal ia Walla up with the times, a live city in a thriving section. The first person I met after reach ing the city whom I knew was Flos sie Simpson, formerly of Albany and Eugene, now traveling out of Walla Walla for a wholesale house. He took me over to the store of Gardner & Co., one of the largest here, where 1 met Tom Stevens be hind the counter. Tom's sister. Mrs J. R Flynn. hus band and three children live here. Mr. Flynn representing this territory for Blake, MeFall a Co. I haven't met them yet; but hope to have that pleasure.
