TUESDAY. SEPTEMBER 4. 1917 LOYAL' LABOR The employes of the l eague Is land Navy Yard in New York hav act a fine example to American lab or. There were urgent efforts mad to get them to strike, at a time when such action would have seriously crip pled the government's war prepara tiona. Instead of striking, they ad dressed to the secretary of the navy a manifesto which as an expression industrial patriotism is a model. We desire, they said, to stimu lat all others to the fullest perform aoce of their duty to the country a this time. We promise to stand by you shoulder to shoulder in carrying out measures for the development of our navy. We promise to notify our superiors of any indication of dis loyalty on the part of any employe working for the government. With the fullest confidence that our coun try is in the right in this war, and relying on the wisdom of President Wilson, we earnestly pray for speeay success lor our cause, and we pledge you by our work to do our fall share toward the victory wh will ultimately be ours." This utterance no doubt breathes the spirit of the great majority of workmen in every important industry connected with the war. Many bodies ol workmen however, have let them elves be misrepresented or misled by unwise or unpatriotic leaders. For their own interests, as well as the interests of the nation, they should heed the inspiring words of their New York brethren. Strikes at this time are not onl treasonable, but suicidal. Thev helji the enemy, they prevent or postpone the triumph of principles which near ly all workmen profess to believe in and they threaten the existence o the very unionism in whose namt they are called. We want no labor wars dragging the nation down in the midst of its great war for human freedom and opportunity. We want loyal service from all classes of citizens. friendly adjustment of industrial disputes is easily possible when work men are seeking no undue privilege or advantage the government. which has almost limitless authority, does not want to use its authority harshly. It is ready to deal fairly with all who deal fairly with it. But fair ness there must be, on the part of labor just as on the part of capital. The capitalists are now being forc ed to do their part. Their wealth is not allowed to go on strike. Their profits are being confiscated for war expense. Their plants are com mandeered. Their personal services are requisitioned. The cry that "wealth must serve" has been met. There must be no holding back now on the part of labor. HOLLEY FARMER MAKES MODERN METHODS PAY That modern methods and hard work will make I. inn county farm land pay a good rate of interest on the investment is indicated by the ex perience of Chas. Hand of Holley. Mr. Hand purchased the old Wright place located near Holley some time ago when it was earning its owner practically no revenue. He took short courses at the Oregon Agriculaurtl College and adopted the methods tanght in that institution in handling his land. The rotation of crops wa one of his hobbies and he is now cleaning up the sum of $2500 per an aom. He it a great believer in the money valae of a crop of rape. He asserts that one acre of rape will fatten 400 pounds of pork wt-irh at present pric es is worth $60 thus making a good profit on an acre of land LOCAL Grains Vheat Oats, new Bran Clover, seed Vetch seed Hay, cheat Hay, vetch Hay, Timothy Clover Klour, hard wheat Flour, valley Sugar ..70S75C J6 -lextfisv $3.10 $18 $18 -J20.00 416.00 Butterfat Creamery butter, .411.88 ...4IO.4O 49.18 48c Country Butter, trade Egga and Poultry Egg, cash Eggs, trade Hens, lb Roosters, ..
