WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 29. 191;. ALL'S WELL WITH THE WAR There haa been an imperjion in thia country, cleverly iostcred b pro-German agents and unintelligent pacifists, that the Alhea are "about all in." We hear it aaid that they " wished thia war onto" the United Statea, and that with our entrance they have meant to "lay down" and let us do the fighting. We have been represented as hold ing the bag." France, we have been told, even by sincere friends of the Allied cause, is "exhausted." Great Britain has been portrayed aa in effective and despairing and Italy as having "shot her bolt." Nothing further waa to be expected of Rus sia. Recent events have shown the ut ter falsity of this view. The of fenaive blows struck on nearly every front give no indication of weak cess. The French have made a ter rific onslaught around Verdun. The British have crashed the strong Ger man line on the Ypres front. The Canadians have forged ahead in the hardest task of the war and nearly completed the encircling of Lens. The Italians have cut a wide swath on the Isonzo front, and drawn nearer to Trieste. These concerted offensives hav netted the Allies many thousands ct prisoners, scores of big guns and countless machine guns and other booty And meanwhile the Russian have been holding their own. F'orced back at some points, they have won at others. German and Austrian re ports, making much of the number oi Russian and Roumanian prisoners captured, have ignored the fact tha on the entire eastern front they have lost more prisoners to the enemy than they themselves have taken. There is today no sign of weak ness in the iron ring, with tiie excep tion of Russia, and Russia's offensive power grows steadily. Great Britain and Italy are stronger than they have been at any time. And I'rancc supposed to have been "bled white' has absolutely refuted that belief. Her military successes have corroborated the statement made a short time ago by Andre Tardieu. French commis aioner to the United States. Despite the three years' ' losses. F'rance has today 3,000,000 soldiers in the lighting zone, the largest num ber she has had since the war be gan. She must have a million ot more back of the line. With those and the men still in the colonies, she can maintain her hig fighting force at its present level, Mr. Tardieu says, "for a long time to come." In man-power, on the western front where the war began and where it will no doubt be ended, our allies out number the Germans nearly two to one. They surpass them enormous ly in artillery power. The huma:i wastage continually lessens, as their artillery .preponderance increases. France lost in the second half of 1916 with all her big battles, only 1.28 per cent in killed, missing and prisoners a total of only about 65,000 men, not counting her wounded. And France is still financially strong. Of to Jan. I, 1917, she had borrowed on ly a little more than a billion dol lars, and had loaned nearly that much to small allies. It is the Central Towers that are discouraged. They are facing inevit able defeat. They will never again be capable of an offensive on the western or southern front. The French, British and Italians win con tinually. Progress may be slow, but there r always progress Little by little the enemy is being worn down and made ripe for the final debacle. That debacle will come next year when the offensive power of the Unit ed States is added to that of our al lies, when Russia is able to strike with renewed strength, and when the Germans and Austrians axe weakened to the breaking point by persistent defeat, loss oi men and deprivation of food SWEDE TELLS OF GERMAN LABOR CONDITIONS (By L'niteJ Press) Stockholm. Hiltzing promised the Swed ten marks a day. with only two marks deducted for hooard and room an.', tailroad fare. He accepted and on :he two-day trip to Torgan. his en lire food w-as two sandwiches. The meals and lodgings were un bearable, the Swed said. For break :ast they had two thin slices of bread and imitation coffee. Mid-day dinner consisted oi saner kraut and pota toes and at supper they had only -auer kraut .which was mostly water. At tea-time in the afternoon they had :n addition, two more slices of bread, without coffee. Their lodgings were in the pit oi an unused theatre, where thirty-two workmen were barracked, U bunks three tiers high. The railroad iarc was deducted rom his first weeks wages and he 1 as told it would not be refunded or he return ticket paid for unless he worked three months. He w-as forced t. work on Sundays and was treated - brutally as the war prisoners. After six weeks the Swed and two thers pawned their spare clothes, e aped by stealth and made their way lack to Sweden, where they are naming their fellow workers to ac ept no German labor offers.
