Their enemies arc openly cou temptuoua. Neutrals close their ears. Whereupon Germany breaks once more in doleful wails, charging a world-wide conspiracy to throttle ami destroy her. What is the truth? Have the All ies, including ourselves, deliberately plotted to tear Germany to pieces: And fias the i st oi mankind turnc i callous? The answer has been admirably giv -en in an editorial in the New York livening Post a newspaper vvhk-ii will be the more readily credited in its explanation because it has, during the greater pan oi the past three year-, been accused oi over-friendliness t' Germany. Remarking on the tremendous mi fortunes now iallen on German; the impending exhaustion of her man- Tower, the threatened collapse of her finance, the failure of her food sup ply, the loss of her shipping and her commerce, the ruin of her industries, all potent reasons for her seeking peace the Post suggests that, over whelming as these evils appear, .they are not the worst. "Germany has to mourn today a greater loss than ot-those mentioned She ha squandered her moral assets At a time when she needs to call u. all her reserves of good faith and con fidencc, she finds that they have been wasted. "Nobody believes her. Nobody trusts her. Upon the German gov- that she is morally bankrupt is be ing pressed from every quarter. "This is the indisputable truth which stands out in the reception throughout the world of the lates peace proposals of Germany. They meet with almost universal scepticisn and suspicion. "It is Germany herself that has tattght the world :o distrust her. A long course of lawlessness heapc; upon duplicity, of brutality intermin gled with deceit, has made every ut . terance of the German government -uspect. Hence the amazing, the painful unanimity with which tiic pub lic men and the press in all bclliger ent and neutral countries have looked upon the repeated peace otfers oi the German authorities as merely a snare for the unwary. , "Whom are they trying to trie row? What new betrayal arc they preparing? For what fresh burst of ferocity is this all a mask? German ostensibly holds out an olive branch tut prudent statesmen insist upon ex anrinintj it to see if it does not conceal a dagger. "Thus is the tated and terrible pun isbment of Germany already begin ning. She is reaping what she has owed. Her rulers have brought the good name of the country into disre pute. Their promises no longer pats anywhere at their face value. This is the havoc which the German govern ment, in three years, has made oi the proud old tradition of Deutsche Treue.' "Today German? look around the horizon and see now here a friend, no where a nation that will accept the bare pledge of the German govern ment. Everywhere they perceive dis like and distrust. This is the mora! punishment of Germany for her crimes, and it is not to he wondered at that many of her citizens are crying out that the punishment is greater than they can bear."
