UNTHINKING PROPAGANDAISTS There are Mill a number of people who like to talk about "real patriot ism" as opposed to loyalty to our allies. These people arc afraid to he pro-British or pro-French. They im agine themselves pro-American. But arc they? Dean Shailer Mathews of Chicago Uni ersity. answers the question strongly in the negative, as do other Americans. They are not pro-Americans. They have become pro-Ger-uaas. As Dean Mathews says, it makes no difference whether there is German money back of their talk or not. It may be quite unconscious and innocent on the part of the speak er. Bat it's German propaganda Just the same, and it helps our enemies quite as effectively as the organized and paid-ior propaganda. It isn't safe to be an idealist unless sober thoughtfulness goes with the idealism. Without the ability to see the issues clearly and to think through to the root of the matter, the ideal ist is easily led astray. To quote Dean Mathews: "We are in the midst of war, and whoever undertakes to confuse one's mind to weaken our sympathies with oar allies, or cause suspicion of Great Britain, is enemy of the United States of America.' We can no longer be partisans on any side but oar own. And we can't be pacifist of the present-day type. "There is something worse than war the destruction of those institutions and that nationality which embody our conceptions of a state that is composed of free self-governing citi- IUIET KM. A STRONG CANDIDATE ( From Cottage Grove Sentinel) The Heppner Herald this week suggests E. E. Brodie, ex-president of Oregon Sate Editorial association, for secretary of state. Entirely with out suggestion on his part, this pro posed candidacy was the subject cf considerable discussion among the newspaper boys at the recent editor ial association, and it was the opin ion of all those who made any com ment that no better man could be picked for the job. "The editor of the Sentinel has been in a position to become pretty well acquainted with Brodie and his work and can say, with reservation, that he is in every way Pitted for the job. "Brodie has made a success of a large business of his own and as pres ident of the editorial association, made a success of the business of others. He has a superabundance of energy to go with the other necessary qual ifications The Sentinel understands that the present secretary of state is constitu tionally ineligible for another term. This then, is the psychological mom ent to bring forward a man like Brod ie, who will maintain the splendid pre cedents of the office." Had Interesting Trip Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Burkhart have just returned from a motor trip to the Tillamook country. They made th "loop" from Albany to Tillamook by way of Seaside, Astoria, up the lower Columbia Highway, continuing on the upper Columbia Highway as far as Cascade Locks, returning thm Port land and home by way of Wilhoit Spring thru the Waldo Hills, in all covering a distance of nearly 600 miles They report a very interest to trip.
