AUGUST 6. 1917. WHAT WE'RE FIGHTING FOR Molt American! cannot see why it should he necessary to repeat, every week or two, the reasons our coun try has for being at war w ith Ger many. But efforts to becloud the issue arc still being made, as they have been from the moment Germany drew the sword and struck at the heart of civ uation. There are still German pro ,agandists, fanatical pacifists and peo ple affected with incurable stupidity and apathy who persist in beclouding our national aims and putting doubt into the minds of vatriots. Thus it have to tall back on the old pedagogical principle of repeti tion. It is necessary to repeat the truth over and over, even to the weariness of intelligent and patriotic citizens, in order that none of us may misunderstand the nature of the great struggle and the part we must play in it. Secretary Lansing, in a recent speech to the officers' reserve corps at Madison Barracks, N. V., made statement of the matter admirably fitted to the present situation. He pointed out that we arc by no means ic this war for merely altruistic pur poses. Too much, perhaps, has been made of the boast that we are tight' ing to liberate the rest of the world We are doing so, indeed; but to tell the plain truth, that effort is only incidental to the maintenance of our our own liberty. We are fighting pri marily ior ourselves, though proud in the realization that victory for us will mean universal victory for our own democratic ideals. "Imagine Germany victor in Eut- ope because the United States re mained neutral," says the secretary "Who then, think you, would be the next victim of those who are seek ing to be masters of the whole earth? Would not this democracy be the on ly obstacle between the autocratic rulers of Germany and their supreme ambition? Do you think that they would withhold their hands from to rich a prize'" "Let me then ask you, would it be easier or wiser for this country single-handed to resist a German Empire flushed with victory and with great armies and navies at its command than to unite with the brave enem ies of that empire in ending for all time this menace to our future? "Primarily, then, every man who crosses the ocean to fight on foreign oil against the armies of the Ger man emperor goes forth to fight for his country and for the preservation of those things for which our fore fathers were willing to die. To the preservation of those things we owe the same debt that we owe to those men who in the past fought on Amer ican soil in the cause of liberty. No. not the same debt, but a greater one." Let us never, for a moment, lose tight of the fact that our own free institutions, our own ideals, our own safety of life and property, our own self-respect, our own proud sense of citizenship in the greatest and best conntry the tun ever shown on, arc ail ai stake, imperilled by the brutal lust for power of an evil group of German autocrats We have ample cause for war in the wrongs Germany has inflicted on us in the patt. But we are not much concerned now with dealing punish ment for past offenset. We look to the future. We fight for our children and grandchildren, not for conquest, oat to save America from dwindling tr a third-rate power nnder the iron heel of Kaiseritm. GERMAN SOLDIERS KEEP RECORDS OF PILLAGING By U With the French Armies. July 15 illy Mail! Documentary evidence has just been seemed by the KrctK-n military authorities establishcing that Germany's youngest classes of end .- ear-old troops participated in ihe pillaging and destroying o French illagcs that preceded the tier ivan retreat of last March. The lieutenant made us a beaut iful discourse. Jan 14 Afternoon at Chauny There is mighty little left there. Feb. 21. We have received orders to destroy all wagons ami vehicles that remained in Grand : to rendei them useless by sawing them. We de stroyed ten. Pah. 22 All of the beds, springs, and mattresses have been gathered to gether at Apiltoy to be sent into Germany. March 6 Worked at an artillery position in the vicinity of Sinceny Sinceny is in ruins. The villages, in cluding Chauny, are all in flames. All of the fruit trees have been sawn down. March 12 Worked on the roads Nearly aff of the houses of Bichana court, including the tower of jthe church, have been blown up by a mine. March 17 At 8:30 we departed from Fressancourt for Mortiers via Versigny. We arrived at Mortiers at 4:30. No contonement especially It is now five days since we have received bread.
