THE POOD CONTROL BILL Replying to a recent editorial pub lished in the colnmns of the Demo crat, the Corvallis-Gaiette Times in effect charges that Senator Chamber lain became a rubber stamp ior the southern Senators in the fight over the passage ol the food control bill The Democrat of course has do means of knowing where Brother In galls obtained his information but we are quite certain that it was not gleaned from the congress onal rec ord. The plain tacts of the matter arc that Senator Chamberlain votel against the McXary amendment to the food control bill ior substan tially the same reasons tba; he vot ed against an amendment which em anated from one of the southern Sen ators and had the backing of the solid Soutn. The bill proposed to ap propriate several million dollars for fertilizer which would have been us ed largely in the southern states. Senator Chamberlain had a job to perform. His job was to pass the food control bill and to successfully accomplish his purpose it was neces sary to prevent, insofar as possible the multiplicity of amendments. That he was forced to step upon the pet measures of his western and south ern colleagues does not necessarily mean that the bills were lacking in merit but that they were proposed ai an amendment to an administration war bill at a time when its passage was hanging in the balance and the country was clamoring for action. They should have been introduced as separate measures and been permitted to stand or fall upon their merits It was incredible that the United States Senate should continue in this critical juncture playing politics and letting Uself be pulled and hauled by selfish and conflicting business in terests. The food supply of the na tion w-as at stake. The life of our al lies and of the whole allied cause was at stake. The losing or winning of the war depends primarily on whether the populations of the allied countries can be fed through the coming year. We have the food, supplied by the loyal efforts of our farmers, with the help of Providence. And while Congress dawdled and quarrelled and procrasti nated that food was beginning to rot and waste and pass into the hands of the speculators. Instead of an adequate system of public control, insuring that all our foodstuffs will be reaped, trarwpoit cdt conserved and distributed in fair portions and at fair prices to the mil lions who need them, we had chaos in the national capitol. Senator Chamberlain attempted to bring order out of chaos. lie was the formidable foe of procrastination and delay. He was one member of the Unitetd States Senate who put aside all political considerations and voted for the greatest good of the greatest number. If this be deserving of criticism, in the name of Heaven, let us revise our version of true patriotism.
