TRAINING PUBLIC SERVANTS Training foi ; tiblic service is com ing to ' . di-frnitely recognised as the best way to attain the highest kind of sen ice. Gradually the state universities and private colleges are establishing departments especially devoted to sii.h instruction. Government administration is a more difficult task today than it ha been in tin- past. The problems most play a smaller part in the actual ad ministratis n i the people's affairs Party ties and prejudices must give way to ability and efficiency. The -University of Wisconsin is about to open a public service train ing school. It "ill be one of sev eral institutions, among them the University of Texas, Western Re serve University, Columbia Univer sity and the College of the City oi New York th;it have endorsed such work. The National Society for the Pro motion of Training for Public Ser vice is pushing the work everywhere. It seems a&ured that the idea will spread and that more and more young men and women looking toward pub lic careers will have to train for them as carefully as lawyers and physicians train for their work. There will he the danger of spec ialziing too soon, of narrowing the educational foundation of the public servant. Making the student get out with public officials and study actual concrete problems as they are being handled in everyday life will do much lb keep a sane balance between acad emic theories and the realities of administration. On the whole, the good that will be accomplished by such training seems to outweigh the danger of developing an over-expert body of officials.
