They inject into American public opinion an element of restraint and circumspection which already has often been the cause of embarassment to Herr Wilson and his English friend. We may be certain that at this moment alto they ar at their posts." This is intended as praise of our German-Americans, based evidently on the assumption that they are bet ter Germans than Americana. We do not see how it can be received other wise than with keen resentment by the great mass of our Germanic cithteBs. And the writer plainly has the "wrong dope" as usual. There has indeed been a disquiet ing amount of thinly veiled pro-German activity in this country, operat ing under various disguises, since war was declared; but it has evident ly been the work of comparatively few men, some of them aliens. The absence of any such general German American fight against onr full partici pation in the war as the Cologne newspaper assumes is seen in the tre mendous success of the Liberty Loan and in the rapid maturing of all onr big war plans. Knotts went to Port land this morning to visit with friends until Sunday, when she will be joined by Mrs. Roy llutchins of this city. and the two will go to Canada togeth er, to meet their husbands and make their future home. Win Teach at Mission Miss l.ucile Diven, daughter of Rev. Diven 01 this city, left this morn ing for Sitka. Alaska, where she has accepted a position as teacher in the mission at that place. ALBANY ASTONISHED BY SIMPLE MIXTURE GOVERNMENT WANTS CLERKS The United State Civil Service Commission announce! that, as a 'suf ficient number of male and female stenographers will not be secured from the examination to be held Jnne 30, 1917, to meet the need of the pub lic service, an examination ha been announced to be held at forty of the principal cities in the Northwest on July 7th. Men typewriters without a knowl edge of stenography are desired es pecially in connection with the Quar termaster Corps, United State army, at an entrance salary of $1000 per year. A majority of the clerks in the Quartermaster Corp, U. S. army, are being selected from the typewrit er register, and all male typewriters who can qualify are urged to apply for the examination July 7th. Arrangement wilt be made by the District Secretary to examine all per son who write to him, subject to the subsequent filing and approval of applications, provided the request is received at Seattle in sufficient time to arrange for examination at the place nearest to the applicant' resi dence where the examination will be Mi Inquiries concerning the July 7th examination should be addressed to HERBERT F.
