WEDNESDAY. JUNE 13, 1917 AMERICAN DIPLOMACY The "trained" diplomat of Europe have had a rude awakening since the United State became a partner in the war against Germany. Our diplomacy ha succeeded where European diplo macy ha (ailed. Central and South American na tions turned a deaf ear to the appeals ofthe diplomatic "representative of the allied nations. They have li teued to the representatives of the United States who for the most part have been educated in the great school of practical politics and boast of no titles or decorations. They have played the game and played it well. It is American diplomacy which is welding North and South America into a powerful and invincible sword with which to beat down the soldiers of the Kaiser and substitute justice for might as the correct means of settling disputes among the nations of the world. When Uncle Sam entered the world war, Germany did not realize her strength and the allies did not thor oughly appreciate the value of their new recruit. They reckoned only the poaibilities of raising men and mon ey. The moral influence which the Unit ed States has brought to the allies is tremendous. She is the one nation now engaged in the w-ar (with the possible exception of Belguim) which entered it with no thought of acquir ing territory, money or diplomatic ad vantage. She entered the conflict be cause no other course was open if she was to protect the honor and rights of her citizens. America must now feed her allies and raise and equip an army which will put an end to the bloody war in Europe. It will take time, it will re quire sacrifice and it will take men and money but it can, and will be done. L. J.
