WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 1917. GERMAN LOYALTY. An expression of patriotism by Frederick L. Hoffman, .statistician of the Prudential and a netive of Ger many, published recently in a New York daily, has attracted much at tention. In urging the naturalized citizens of German birth to give their active support to their adopted coun try, Mr. Hoffman writes: The loyalty of Americans of Ger man birth includes the duty, how ever trying of active resistance against any and every foe of the American republic, including the government of their native country, specifically and unconditionally renounced in the sol emn obligation to protect and pre serve the government of the United States.' It is for Americans of German birth and ancestry to do even more than their required share m behalf of the national cause, so that the world's vanishing faith in German honor may be redeemed by those who hold themselves to be ac countable only to the Supreme Being and the government and the people of their adopted country. The world is not at war with the German peo ple, but with the German government and its ruthless and ill considered military policy, without parallel in modern history. In dosing he pays this tribute to Old Glory: In all the world there is no flag more inspiring than the Stars and Stripes; the fairest symbol of un stained honor, after more than a cen tury of national rife and international relations. Life and service under that flag is a priceless privilege and a guaranty of good faith in peace and war. Loyalty to that flag is the su preme duty, not only to the American republic, but to the cause of govern meat by the consent of the gov erned, and liberty and democracy throughout the world. Under that flag Americans of German birth and ancestry, with the countless millions of other origins, have found a new freedom, which is to conserve and maintain enough to have lived for. Above and beyond the glory of em pire and the achievements of mili tary power lies the higher duty of the cause of truth and "the righteous ness that cxalteth a nation."
