It calls for the highest iorm oi couracc It demands moral stamina, which is more rare than physical bravery. It calls for the courage of a man. not that of a wolf. It means putting national justice above national pride. It means the exaltation ot sclircs traint above the passion of ven , gcance. It scorns race-hate, and proclaims. "Above all nations is humanity.' ts patriotism is a ministry to the world and not a menace. It means the higher manliness of the gentleman, and not the cheaper manliness of the bullv. It often leads to abuse, contempt, martyrdom. It led to the Prince f Peace there. Peace is the ally of wisdom, gen erous patience, far-sUht. human con sideration for humM- lives. War is the ally of egotism, anger, cruelty, vainglory. Peace is the unshaken courage of sanity; war is the tel. blind courage of madness: . The kings of earth are men of war. the King of Kings, when He sent cohort of angels to earth, gave them no war-cry bnt "Peace on earth, good will toward menf ABUSING ORGANIZATION Western World There is a move on foot to or ganize a county tax league. Such an organization can be of service to the taxpayers providing it is composed of men who are representative of the best interests of the conntv. "The writer has had the oppor tunity to witness the manner in which several such leagues operated in other parts of the Pacific North west They started out splendidly. but invariably the membership sim mered down to a small bunch of radical conservatives, (usually land poor), who completely lost sight of the original obiects of the league, and used the organization to fight anything and everything, no matter how badly it was needed, so long as it cost the taxpayers something. "A tax league is a fine thing pro viding it retains sufficient progres sive element to keep it rational" PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATION Baker Democrat Some people hold that the pres ence of General Pershing's com mand to Chihuahua is all that has kept Villa from chasing Carranz.-i's forces out of the state. American withdrawal, therefoye, at the urgent request of the first chief will per haps be the best way to enlighten that personage as to a situation which, professing ability to control, he has never yet adequately met. BURBANK BEATEN Monmouth Monitor Uncle Joe Craven says the exneri mentors at the O.A.C. have finalli succeeded in perfecting a crowles rooster. He is nrepared to demon strate this for he has one. Thi may be considered the hight o rooster hreedino t am. , . SbSV1I will lav as manv ec7cc . ihr huIU breeds have been perfected and now mat the crowless rooster is evolved notning else need be sought for. PENNANCB OR PRAI8E Salem Journal: Governor Withvcombe hat nm mised Rev E. B. Lockriart. pastor of the Methodist church at Stavton thai soon after the legislature adioitrns he will visit Stavton and fill the nul- pit of the ehurrh at the regular Sun "T services. There is something significant m his excellency seekins tne nuiet of that little ritv fir M. legislature adjourns and something really sngective fa his devoting the day to preaching and prayer, so soon after the lawmakers lesve. Is he do ing pennance or offering praise? Every smoker In Albany should use McCourt's Hand Made or Albany Spe cial dgars made by the Willamette Cigar Mfg. And yet the voice often sounds, plainer from Portland than from a local number. The Democrat yesterday said Fmight lived at Eugene. Todav wc report that Sumtf resides at Hubbard, which heats Eugene by several rods. A spell game is being played back east- American shell makers want to ;ct double price, and because Uncle S refuses to be robbed, numerous ululations are heard. The Voter, of Portland, savs that country papers arc not so brilliant in editorial expression as metropolitan papers. Which? Half the metropolitan editorials would put an owl to sleep at midnight Sensational assininitv is the head ing of a Portland paper's article on ome of the doings of the Oregon Senate. Oregon needs more capital for de velopment and whenever it makes the interest limit too low it drives it iway. Capital must have a reason able return for the risk. At the same time the state does well to gnard against Shvlockism. The legislature's consolidation pro tram has been a good deal of a ioke. Strange Fact Both dogs and humans are alike. For kind words they're athirst; And yet they seem to think the most Of those who treat them worst. FACT Irrisponaibiliry and Responsibility I sratrhed them as thev danced away Without a tie to bind them. They have no love of yesterday That thev have left behind them. She sheds no tears o'er tiny shoes Or dainty little frockerv. They've never had a babe to lose And all their lov is mockery. Thev know not what it is to sigh Through long, black hours of still ness. "nd watch a little child rlef- The fever of an illness. To pleasure's call thev come and go. Mere devotees of follv. They say that happiness thev know. I'd term it melancholy. ANOX.
