AMERICAN WIVES America continues to be iortunatc in being out of the great European war. and yet in different ways this country is interwoven with the strug gle in a manner to bring the events close home, it transpires that many American girls arc married to the met: of different nations actively engage! in the life-and-dcath conflict. A cor respondent writing from Rome brings the relationship close home in refer ence to just one nation, Italy. He : Italy's war today lies heavily on the hearts of many American girls manied to Italian noblemen. Some of these girls have siver. their hus bands, 'others their sons to Savoia's cause. Princess Buoncampagni, who eras Miss Draper of Boston and Washing ton, is spending a lonesome honey moon here. Her husband had to re join his regiment immediately on his arrival in Rome. Count Dentice del Frasso is one of the general staffs motorcycling mes sengers. His wife was Georgians Wilde of St. Louis. She is the step daughter of Henry Seigel. the one time American merchant prince. Princess Allesandro Ruspoli has two sons under arms. One is in the army and the other in the navy. She was formerly Eva Broadwood. Countess Telfener. who was Ada Hnngerford. has a son in the army Edward Kingsland, who became an Italian citizen after his widowed mo ther married Prince Camporeale. has been dangerously wounded at the front. He is a cavalry officer and was decorated for gallant conduct in both the Lybian war and this war. Prin cess Camporeale originally was Mary Benney, a celebrated New ' Jersey belle. The son of the Duchess Luigi I-ante della Rovere is serving with the Ital ian troops in Macedonia. He is call ed Don Luigi della Rovere. The Duchess was known to American so ciety as Mathilde Davis. One of the sons of Princess Poggio Suaso Ruspoli is an aviator. The oth er is in the automobile service. She was formerly Josephine Curtis of New York. All these titled Americans are also doing their own bit for their adopted country. Red Cross nursing and car ing for widowed and orphaned child ren are the most popular services. But the military sewing rooms and the food stations attract their quota. IT WORKS Pendleton E. O.: Conclusive proof that prohibition does lessen minor offenses such as drunkenness and disorderly conduct is furnished by a comparison of the police records of the past year and of the year 191 :. During the year just closed there were 386 arrests made by the Pendleton police, whereas the total for 1915 was 1440. The decrease has been approximately 73 per cent. December had the greatest number of arrests in the monthly record of the past year, the total being 67. The biggest month in 1915 was 288 in Sep tember. The smallest month in 1916 was August with 11 arrests and the smallest in 1915 was February with 52. .
