PRAYING FOR VICTORY The Democrat has received thru the mail from the east a circular letter in which the Democrat is asked to publish an inclosure, addressed to the Kaiser, in response to an article head ed "The Kaiser Prays For Victory The writer declares that his words are a direct revelation of God. and declares that all he wants to do is to serve fellow men Some extracts arc published because of a striking char acter and written in a readable way. and as well because offering, atter all some things to reflect over. The writter says that while directed to the kaiser the suggestions are for all of the belligerents: Your prayer is unworthy of you and your traditions. Why do vou mock God? As well pray lor the world to end tomorrow as to pray for the per manent triumph of Injustice and your false gods of militarism. Your prayer will never be answered Those crushed through cruel torture and loss unspeakable the maim ing and the loss of loved ones held dearer than life itself: Those once strong, now mangled and blinded and crippled ajid diseas ed; and those struck dumb to be hold the heartless, needless sac rifice of your best Inanhood: Those touched with sympathy at tht pain and the sufferin- and the anguish that enthrall Europe: Those overwhelmed with horror even to contemplate the sorrow and the ruin that vour war has wrought.: The bleeding heart of all humanity implores you to change your pray er! Pray rather for victory over selfish ness The sin that is hurling your own and other mighty empires to certain destruction. Pray rather for vision. Pray for the Soul-Gift that sees be yond transient trade advantage and property rights. Pray for the Soul-Gift that recog nises the difference between mere temporal accomplishments and achi evements imperishable. Pray for the Soul-Gift that dreams of conquests w-orth while and endur ing, conquests of the mind ard heart and character; conquests worth striv ing for. living for, dying for. Pray for the Soul-Gift that precei ves. in the world of men there is one thing grander than to succeed, one thing more wonderful than to win, one thing more glorious than to con quer that is to surrender when you know your course to be wrong. Pray rather for humility. Not the humility that grovels in the dust, but the humility that can place Truth and Justice above National Honor and False Pride. Pray for Humility that can place Universal Brotherhood above the Blind Patriotism of artificial bound aries and the damning hates and pre judices of nationalism (for are we not all children of one God?). Pray for the Humility that can place Peace and Mercy above Ambition and Revenge. Pray rather for wisdom. Pray for the Wisdom to know that with your mind and heart you can fuse a character that shall influence, that shall mould (which is far nobler than self--: 1.- to direct) the destinies of al! nations great and small: while with terrorism and tribute and bondage, combined with the best-trained army and a larger reserve of guns and am munition than all your enemies are able to procure you cannot really con quer, you cannot successfully reign over the smallest principality, without the consent of the people Pray for the Wisdom to read the verdict of history and know that for every Victory that tramples upon the rights of vour fellow-men (no matter how many victories you can show where Might apparently triumphed, no matter how richly those victories may seem to flourish for a time.) Fail ure and Defeat will follow you and in th end vou must pay the price which is Decay and Death. A new story is In Silent Daces, by White. It is one of the North. Though not a loe story, there is love or something like it in it It is full of nature, anil there is some tragedy. A very readable story, it is said to be attracting a good deal of attention. Authors scratch their heads vicious ly to get something different, and White is doing it, telling stories that give one the shivers, but grip never theless. The price of monkeys has increased. Wall street is getting busy again, catching its breath. Easy Problem She1 But I can't cook and I hate to wash dishes. He Then I'm the man you ought to marry. I can't afford to buy any thing to cook, and so we won't need clothes. Boston Transcript. A Quarrelsome Home Among the applicants for employ ment in the service oi a Jersey house hold there once came a big. husky Irish girl named Rosalie. "Whai was your reason for leaving your last place. Rosalie?" asked the mistress during the course of exam ination. "I couldn't stand the way the mas ter and mistress used to quarrel all the time." "Dear! Dear!" exclaimed the lady. "Did they quarrel all the time:' "All the time, mum." repeated Ro salie, '"and, mum. whin it wasn't me and him, it was me and her." The Youth's Companion.
