Daily Democrat F. P. NUTT'NG, lti. Entcrad at the postoffice M All any. Oregon, at second-class matter MONDAY, DECEMBER 18. 1916. THE STORY OF BUCK Buck wss net hi firt name; pc -pie merely called him that became tl ty liked him. He was the tin I that people nmn like good-looking, km erous, e en - tempered. industrious He had an old lather and a listei bat was not only a good fellow but a $0i d fellow." C ne day he ca'.Ied at :he riHatl r;toffice and received a Ictrrt- bcai it.g a postage stamp with a pi-;riit i (ivurge Washington, the Ktlstf ol ii ecuntry. The letter bro'V''' l Ow mwi or at least so thought Muck It told how he might receive beer packed in a sugar barrel so that the nature of the contents would not be known. So Buck and some of the boys sot up a little party to be given on the banks of a majestic river which Doors between cliffs three hundred feet i.igh. Late at night the party began :he five-mile walk home. One of them never got there. His body was found the next morning at the bottom or a cliff bruised and torn by its flight through tree limbs and by its mad tumble over great boulders. The incident was not entirely fruit ful of no good. The United States got two cents out of it. That, at least, was something to miticatc the dis tresi of Buck's family and newhhors. was it not? Well, perhaps it was Mt Ex. Oregon or for southern Oregon. The Journal's suggestion therefore is that portion of the state already well supplied on the score of normal institution be given two additional schools, making three institutions within a radius of a few- miles, while southern Oregon and eastern Oregon remain out in the cold. What the East Orcgonun thinks of that idea could be expressed more clearly were newspapers published on asbestos paper. In the meantime we will only mention that this section of the state is of volcanic origin and that there is still some brimstone ly ing around NORMAL SCHOOLS The situation calls for two normal schools in Oregon. One should be in Eastern Oregon. This is the only fair solution of the matter. It is also an established fas-t that a normal school should be in acity large cnouglj to offer public school facilities suf ficient for training purposes by the students of the school. The Pendie E. O. says on the subject: In seeming despair efforts to sclve the normal school problem the Port land Journal suggests that the normal courses he established at O A. C. and at the state university at Eugene. Through doubtless made from good motives the suggestion is absurd be cause it calls for disreguarding the most important of the establishc rules governing the location of nor mal schools. The LTnites States bureau of edu cation specifies first of all that a nor school should be located in a large town situated so as to most effective ly serve the territory involvct' and lays down the principle that n nor mal school can ser-. , r, tevtt ry from which it is rco.rr.':,!- -atjy remote. Every edn-.-:r fctton that 'hesc principles are sound. All odavflktrrs know that the per--.it trouble a ses from the bet !
