Dee 13 With talks by Misa Margaret Wilson, the presi dent's daughter: Percy Mackayt. poet and playwright, and Dr. Henry K. Jackson, ot the United States Bureau of Kducation. the 12th annual conven tion of the American Civic Associa tion opened here today. Misa Wilson presided at the after noon session, arnica devoted to a discussion ot the use of the schools as a community center She made no extended talk, however. Dr. Jackson, of the Bureau of Education, discussed the same topic at length and Mr Mackaye spoke on the growth of the community drama. The delegates of the convention will be the guests of the Washington Real Estate Board tonight at which time official of the War Department are expected to outline the plans of the Federal government for the improve ment of Potomac Park, the District of Columbia's future municipal playground T. A strange nervous case resulting in unconsciousness and partial paral) sis threatens the life of Mrs. Cather ine Thorne, instructor in the depart ment of public speaking, dramatic professor of the university of Oregon Mrs. Thorne has been ill for some time but it was not until tonight her case took a serious turn and she is now battling for life. Physicians are at a loss to explain her case. Three doctors and a trained nurse are in attendance. ! For a rnftidrahl iim, tin Thorne lias been unconscious and slic fails to recognize faces and is unable to speak intelligibly when conscious ness does return for short periods of time. Part of her face is partially paralyzed. One explanation advanced by at tending physicians is that a growth exits on the bone about the ski: II caused by a concussion probably do to a fall. er's Add.
