DECEMBER 13, A MENACE TO OREGON Eugene Guard: A friend who has inside information tells us that one eastern m.iA house has been paying an OrCf party $1,500 a year to mail its cata logs throughout its Oregon tern ton Until about a year ago when a nc parcel post ruling was made the - r catalogs were mailed from a citv south of us; but since that timethc have been mailed from Portland, to which city they shipped by Freig The amount paid by the CI house is a revelation of the enormous business secured in this territory and of the vast sums of money that go out that should be kept at home. The man or woman who docs not believe that the money sent away h home bafts should consider this 51. 500 a year salary. It represents a very small part of one per cent of th money taken out of the stale each year by this mail order house to -a nothing of the" drain upon our finan ces by other similar mst-tutions. We talk of establishing industries in Oregon and steps to make better business here. Yet, year after year, as a community, we are undermining our own prosperity by patronizing mail order houses. To keep our mon ey at home would in effect amount to the creation of a great industry here. OLD MEN A recent new-paper dispatch re ports a movement to secure pensio for superannuated government em ployes. The grayheard of the depart ment has always been one of Wash ington's most perplexing problems. In spite of all the red tape that inter feres with government efficiency, the government clerk is apt to be a hard working man. He ha? at least done his best by Uncle Sam. It is a hard proposition to know what to do with him when he gets by the a?e of great est efficiency. In business it is much the same. There are a (Treat many concerns that keep him long after te time when he really earns his pay. But in per haps more he is coldly and curtly toU that his place is needed by a stro. : man. It is a bitter day when hr i! turned adrift. His heart and haid are as ready to work a ever, but th: snap and vim of youth have gone. HV absolutely is not worth a 'ireat deal of money, hut the world 'pith tu turn to dust and ashes when he is told of that fact. The proposition in the movement referred to is to establish a govern ment pension system for aged em ployes. It may be possible to work this out. But the taxpayers ttfe4 regard the cost of government work as too hiih. If the departments could be systematized by the same kind of business ability that organizes a hitr factory, they ought to be able to pay their present wazes, provide petition and not increase the Cost at all Ex.
