ao two : ALBANY DAILY DEMOCRAT,. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13. 1 918. . Daily Democrat F. P. NUTTING Lessee. Entered at the postoffice it Albiny, WEDNESDAY, NOV. 15, 1916. WILSON'S LIFE. Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born at Staunton, Va,, Dec. 28, 1856, the son of Rev. Joseph R and. Jessie Woodrow Wilson. His ancestry was Scotch-Irish on both sides. At two years his parent took him to Augusta, Ga, where he spent his early boyhood and entered school. In 1879 the Wilsons moved to Co lumbia where his father became min ister of , the Presbyterian church. Tommy" continued his schooling here until 1873, when he entered Da vidson (S. C.) college. In 1874-the family moved again to Wilmington, N. Cm the future president with them. The next year he entered Princeton university, being graduated in 1879 af ter taking honors as a debater and a writer on political economy. It was while in Princeton that Wilson laid the foundation for his broad knowl edge of economics and international law that later landed him in the pres idency. " 1 . After taking a year's law course at the University of Virginia, Wilson started practicing law at Atlanta in 1881.' In 1883 he entered John, Hop kins university for a two years' course in history and political economy. In 18SS at Savannah Woodrow Wil son (he now had dropped the Thom as) married Miss Ellen Louise Ax son, whose father, like his own,, was a Presbyterian clergyman. For three years he taught political economy and history at Bryn Mawr, then for two years at Wesleyan university, Mid dletown, Conn.: Then he became a professor of juris prudence and politics at Princeton, and in his thirteenth year as profes sor there was elected president of the university in 1902. In his eight years' service as this university's head, during which he democratized the institution (it had been known as a "club of rich men's tons") Wilson attracted the attention of Colonel George Harvey, noted New York editor, who fathered the .Wil aon presidential boom. In 1910 Wilson resigned as Prince ton's president, after being over-ruled la a dispute with the trustees. The same year he was elected 'governor of New Jersey and immediately started a fight which ended in the demolition of the bipartisan machine that had ruled the state and restored popular government,, '.'V' His governmental exploits in New Jersey led Wrkon's nomination for the presidency by the democrats in 1912; after a hard fight, and his sub sequent election. Mrs. Wilson's death in 1914, when the country was facing a grave inter national crisis, cas a pall of sorrow over the entire nation. On December 18, 1915, the president married Mrs. Edith Boiling Gait, wid ow of a well known Washington busi ness man.. His renomination was never ques tioned and the record made in his first four years in the white house brought about his re-election at the polls. GREAT OUTLOOK. The Democrat is confident that the Northwest is on the even of the great est lumber industry in the history of the business, one that sliall rival the steel trade in importance. Recently there was a big conference of lumber men at Spokane, at which some of the leading men declared that within ten - years the Pacific manufacturers would be called upon to produce one-half of the lumber . output of the United States against a present production of One-sixth of the nation's cut. This was the most startling infor mation developed from the confer ence on the questions of present and future production and consumption, 'As the conference became an informal discussion of inside facts in: the in dustry, the visitors-brought the West ern manufacturers face to face with the fact that the great Southern and Middle Western timber areas will not continue to meet the demands at the present proportion.; that the North west and West Coast mills will see a constant increase in volume of busi ness; that in meeting 50 per cent of the consumption ten years hence the Western mills will be compelled to maintain an output far above 50 per cent of the present consumption. There should be no competition among the churches; but cooperation. When selfishness is eliminated from church work there will be a transfor mation.. : Not more members is wanted as much as better members.
