ALBANY DAILY DEMOCRAT, TtlESDAV. 6CTOBER H IQlft. L Daily Democrat F. P. NUTTING ' Lessee. Entered at the postoffice at Albany, - Oreton, as second-class mat;r. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1916. LABOR FOR WILSON. i The advice of Gompers, president of the American Federation of La bor, to labormen to vote for President Wilson, and advising all organizations to meet and consider the matter, is a striking and significant thing in the campaign, and many republicans free ly admit it means the reelection of President Wilson, without doubt. He says: "Never at any time within the last SO years have the workers had more at stake in any political campaign than in the one that is to be decided in the election November 7. "During the present administration and particularly this campaign there has been developed a clear-cut issue between the workers, the producers, and those who manipulate the pro ducts of the labor of others, the ex ploiters. 'The issue is represented in the campaign by the conflicting in terests represented by labor and Wall street. "Though half of the world has been involved in a terrific conflict, and it seemed at times as though our Nation must be drawn into the vortex of hu man slaughter, yet the chief executive of our land has been able to manage the affairs of the nation and the in terests of our citizens so that without the horrers of war he had established and maintained protection of human life and human, rights in the some what vague domain of international law. Without involving this nation in war, he has secured for us all of the protection and all of the benefits that would have accrued from a suc cessful international war, and by dip lomatic correspondence has achieved the victory of embodying concepts of humanity in international activity, insofar as America is concerned. "What has been true n the case of the European war also is true in the tase with the relations between our country and Mexico. "The interests that have been seek ing to plunge our country into war taot only with European countries but also with Mexico are the interests that are represented by the most sel fish and most conscienceless element of Wall street. . i "During the past four years there has been enacted by congress and signed by President Wilson humani tarian protective legislation unpreced ented in amount and scope. Legislative enactment has secured to wage-earners fundamental rights necessary for the very existence of the organization of labor without which wage-earners -would have nothing of freedom and 'no real opportunity for self-ctter-taent" , ' ' "On November 7 election day a decision will be made which will de termine the future development of our country and the spirit of our national life for years to come. "As representatives of the organ ized labor movement, which is the militant protective organization of all the workers, and which stands pri marily for human rights, we urge that the issues be considered at a regular or special, meeting held by your or ganization. "The meeting should be a general one, and, if necessary, called specially for the purpose of seeing that those who have so much at stake should go to the polls to protect their interests. "There is no doubt that the inter ests all over the country are, and will continue their activity to retain the special privileges and power that they have secretly and corruptly stolen from the people. "While property must be protected and respected, man men, women and children human beings must be the first consideration. "Wage-earners cannot afford to lose their rights and opportunities thru negligence and inaction. .' "Meet, discuss the great issues to he decided on election day, November 7, and then go to the polls, cast your vote as your conscience dictates for labor, justice, freedom and humanity." The sim ple gift that lends the touch of friendship without an obli gation 333 MISFITS The papers, which dare to do al most anything, haven't even dared to attack President Wilson's personal character, as clean a one as there is in the U. S.; but people privately have helped circulate a story as rotten as a five year old apple. It is an old one, which wasn't even rung into the presi dent's former campaign for governor and president. About the worst of all venom is scandal, and the worst of all scandal is the kind without a foundation. Wall street is in a desperate trench this year, and it finds plenty of emis saries. Turning from politics to religion an old savin? of SmirKcon comes up: "The most empty-headed person sets himself up as a judge of religion. People as lean as a race horse get as fat as a percheron after a few doses of criticism. There's a golden mean in the great world of observation. The person all sugar is easily sucked to pieces, the one all vinegar fs quickly spit out. According to the Oregonian. Only One Night En Route . A New Train Portland to San Francisco Lv. According to the straw votes of the country, every where, and the private opinions of even republicans from the east, Wil son will be elected by a big majority of states. We once knew a woman so unself ish that she ate the chicken wing every time. One can run upon good advice all around: On the mail boxes are the . words, "Lift up"; on the semaphores, "Keep to the right." How ignorant we are, the proper way to spell review is revue, the French of it. A paper the other day said a couple were separated by religion. Never; but by the lack of it. "Jaz" is the latest addition to the vocabularies of University of Oregon students. When greater racket is besought, the yell leader cries for "jaz." When student perusal is urgently desired, campus posters put "jaz" in big type. Everybody's saying "jaz" except the disgusted faculty. "Jaz" seems indigenous to the V. (X campus. Its derivation is puzzling even the professor of Thilology. It appears to he autochthonous. The 11:00 p. m. OREGON Ground Floor Studio The Words that seem most nearly synonyms arc "pep" and "ginger."
