The war continues indefinitely with little to show for the slaughter.. With seventeen days to election left for campaigning the issues are pretty well made up, tfnd it is doubt ful if anything new can be sprung to influence voters one way or the oth er. Not many votes will be changed between now and election. With some it is a party matter. With many it has become a matter of getting the best man for the position, one who stands for the best things in government and progress. President Wilson is running on his record. The world knows what v he has done. The record is out in ; the open, one that can easily be un derstood by those honest in their pur poses to- know the real situation. On the other hand Mr. Hughes is working on promises, which are not of the definite character; but general in their nature, with criticism of his opponent. The voters of tlie'country know just what can be depended up on with Mr. Wilson. They do not ,. with Mr. Hughes, any more than they '. did with Mr. Wilson before he had taken his seat at president In the past promises have been as easily broken as eggs. Mr. Wilson has kepi . his, a rare thing in politics. This week heat made a high mark. It is putting the farmer in clo "ver, because it comes early irithe sea- '-' son before much wheat has been sold or contracted. Other things are high, which is proving a big thing for the -. farmer. On the other hand the buyer is having to put up mightily, and he seems as a rule to haye the 'money : for it, making an interesting situation. ' This week Albany has had a con- fcrence of men from the three north western states, men whose mission is . simply to help their fellow men, go ing out into the places not touched by others, and therefore called mis sionaries.' With practically no finan , 'cial gain, just enough for a meagre 1 living they keep up the fight for something bigger than money recom pense. The unselfishness of the men 'stands out like a peak these days when 'people are rushing madly forward af ter the Almighty Dollar, whose spec . taclcs are made of lenses looking like tfiis ($)-($). ' Sometimes men by false pretenses . can secure business, and appear to be doing well; but in- the long run the straightforward course is the one thai counts, even from a financial stand point, for it is a fact, proven thous ands of times, that "murder will out," and whatever is gained by dishon esty is lost in the wind-up. Football, that rough old game, is here in all of its ferocity, drawing big -crowds where the rep. calls for it. Rough as" it is, it is a 'game of won derful generalship, and the rattle headed fellow has no business in the line-up. The man who obeys right is : the one of the greatest value. Funny old world, isn't it? - , "Speaking of mixtures, there is a pood one in Wisconsin. Senator La Follette is running for reelection on the republican ticket. He voted for the Underwood tariff bill and the Adam son eight hour bill, botR of which. Mr. Hughes is fighting. The State journal, of Madison, a republican pa per, has at the head of its columns. For President Woodrow Wilson; for U. S. Senator, Robert M. LaFollette; or Governor, Burt Williams, demo crat, and W. T. Evjue, a leading edi torial writer on the Journal is a re publican nominee for the legislature. We are glad to report that Mr; Hughes is keeping up h!s plan of cam paign, criticism. Herald, supporting Mr. Hughes, gives Wilson after a poll, 312 electoral votes. 226 are necessary for election.
