The European war situation certain ly drags along like molasses in the winter, exhausting resources and pa tience. A squabble in Germany between a couple of factions over the matter of submarine warfare has its interesting side. Germany cannot be blamed for wanting to secure every advantage possible; but the fact is appreciated there that the U. S. has toes thai must not be stepped on too many times. Besides the submarine warfare against the merchantmen, as a mat ter of fact accomplished little or no thing. It caused annoyance, and per haps that is something in war. In football one of the games is to wear the other team out if possible. Men are coached to make it as un pleasant for the members of the op-; . posing team as possible, weakening the man opposite on every opportun- ity. Naturally there is a human side to it the other nations of .the world not involved have a right td insist on, and, where their rights come in. demand protection. The present political campaign is probably like many others that have preceded it, a fight for votes thru all manner of means, evidently under the ' old rule that the end justifies the means. The public is Jearning how v much weight to place on many things, and is often repelled rather than " drawn by campaign slings. This has been true this year in a marked man ner. There is little doubt that Mr. Hughes methods of criticism, without constructive suggestion, have mater- ially helped' Mr. Wilson. There are definite cases of many prominent men who have been repelled front Hughes by, his campaign, and that of Mr. Fairbanks is along much the same line, merely a statement that the re publicans are right and the demo crats wrong regardless of the recog nized achievements in legislation. The end of the regular baseball sea son came with October 1st, so far as the east is concerned, but not the coast. In the east all eyes centered on the outcome of the two big leagues, which resulted in Brooklyn heading the national league and Boston the American league, and now these two teams will play the grand champion ship, a contest that always excites national interest The greatest of all outdoor games it is well for people to turn their minds from work occasion ally to enjoy the outcomes of the sports of the day. Following baseball is football, al ' ready on the gridiron, undoubtedly the roughest of all games, and, yet full of interest for lovers of contests, as most people are in some form. As tough a game as it is it is one of generalship, perhaps more than any other, calling for initiative and inge nuity. Above all, though it shows the strength of team work, the making of men into a machine, backed by brain. Wat c h the Clock in Front of the Y.M.C.A. MISFITS The Oregon!. says twice as many Hughes buttons are seen in Portland as Wilson buttons. Merely a partisan statement, and probably not true. It is said to be a fact that all the Wilson buttons are taken as fast as received. Besides the money for Wilson but tons comes from among trie masses, while Wall Street and the big inter ests are putting up for the Hughes emblems with plenty of money made from Wilson prosperity to meet the bills. A crowd of rich women arc coming out from New York, which doesn't have women suffrage, to Oregon, which does have it, to tell Or. women how to vote. That would make a good movie comedy. A good straw in favor of Wilson i the fact that Gifford Pincliot is oi for Hughes. By the way Pinchot's brother, Amos, is a strong Wilson man, claiming that as a progressive he can secure the kind of legislation the progressive party was organized to secure, thru Wilson's re-election. Like Mr. Hughes Fairbanks is a good vte getter for Wilson. His royal highness (6 feet 5 or 6 makes little improvement over Mr. Hughes himself as a wielder of the hammer. Judge Hughes, who wasn't interest ed in things enough to register and vote for six years, is now going to at tend a world's 'series base ball game. Hooray! A woman In trie citv this week said she would like a Wilson button as big as a plate so people would know she is solidly for Wilson. 'Why did you stop the ice. mother, The iceman left each day? Twas not a heavy price, mother. The iceman made us pay." "My child, no cake We need to take. For Fairbanks is this way." Only a few months ago Taft called Roosevelt a. neurotic, flatterer, honey fugled, the upholder and beneficiary of crooked privilege.
