Established in 1865. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1916 SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGHTS, tt looks as if the . most decided gains in the European war have been on the side at the Allies, though they have had to fight to get what they were after, and ' then only small slices. It is thought the advent of Roumania and Greece will mean ul timate victory to the Allies, but that is only speculation. So far in the war no country has shown more resource fulness than Germany, whose people certainly display a marvellous genius. The expected strike in this country did not occur, a fact that calls for congratulation. This doesn't end the . contest between capital and labor by any means; but it helps temporarily in a decided manner, and leads the way to bigger things later. In politics Mr. Hughes has contin ued his original program of criticis ing everything with the name of Wil son attached to it. As a kicker he carries off everything in sight . To such an extent has his program been followed out that it has become al most a matter of humor. A judge oi the highest court in the world, he had been considered a man of some depth; but in bis campaign he has displayed tittle shrewdness, in fact a lack of it, undoubtedly jeopardizing his chances for re-election. The splendid record - of Mr.Wilson, recognized universally . by people of independence, calls for his reelection. His services to the na tion are appreciated by the masses, which is the only thing that counts The time has passed when politicians on the stump can shake people from their purposes. a long and momentous session, one that has in a very decided manner left its impress upon the world. Without sensation if did its work well. No doubt there have been mistakes, as there always are; but, altogether the result is a wonderful one in modern legislation. - ? Some of the biggest things in the recent congress:. , Reorganization of the army and navy with preparedness program. Regulation of child labor. i Rural credits law. Tariff commission, non-partisan. " National workmen's compensation act If . r .. ' uiwicr sen-government ior tne Philippines. ' Eight hour law for R. R. employes. Abolished stamp' revenue from in come and other taxes. ; $50,000,000 Government owned mer chant marine. These round ups are becoming so common there is danger of their b ing overdone. At the present time, though, people will go miles to see them, enjoying the excitement offered. Though Pendleton is the father of them all it is doubtful if anything will be seen there more thrilling than what will . be presented at Albany, which will have most of the star per formers. , Mortgage Loan. Have plenty of local money to loan on "farms in amounts' from $1000 to $2500; also have Eastern money, and can make loans in amounts ranging from $3500 to $10,000 on good culti vated farms in Linn or Benton coun ties for long time. No delays in ob taining the loan. See J. V. PIPE, 203 West First St. Oregon Junk Co. Pays highest prices for hides, pelts and all lands of junk. 10 horse power steam engine. This year's harvest has been beset by numerous worries. We nearly always have a chance to get nervous; but heretofore the end has always been on the side of the farmer. Mustered out will no doubt be a condiment with a good taste to it lust row. If all the circuses should miss Al bany it will not be such an enormous loss to the city and county; perhips ir.cuey in our pockets. Hushes continues to jolt everything in sight. In the meantime Mr. Hughes is be- ing jolted more than any one. So far his campaign has been one simply of ????????? ? Candidates for president always had rather be right than be elected. a great old game that is getting aged and doesn't work any longer. Sugar is one thing that can drop td the bottom without affecting the Wil lamette valley farmer as a producer. When a boy one of the poems learn ed by Misfits was the following, which continues to have a fine ring to it: Cleon hath a million acres, ne'er a one have I ; Cleon dwelleth in a palace, in a cot tage I; Cleon hath a dozen fortunes, not a penny I; Yet the poorer of the twain is Cleon, . and not I. . . Cleon, true, possesseth acres, but the landscape I; Half the charms to me it yieldeth money cannot buy. Cleon harbors sloth and dullness. freshening vigor I; He in velvet, I in fustian, richer man am I. Cleon is a slave to grandeur, free as Thought am I; Cleon fees a score of doctors, need of none have I. Wealth-surrounded, care-environed, Cleon fears to die; Death may come, he'll find me ready happier man am L Cleon sees no charms in nature, in a daisy, I; Cleon hears no anthems ringing in the sea and sky; -Nature sings to me forever, earnest listener I ; State for state, with all attendants. who would change?
