WEATHERFORD OR HAWLEY. ! , Medford Tribune: Attention is call ed to the utter failure of Congress man Hawley in looking after affairs that concern his district for Astoria is in his district. In legislation he is a negligible quantity. We hear of the efforts made for Oregon by Congress man Sinnott, not anything about Haw ley. He is usually asleep at the switch. Mr. Hawley's utter failure in the legislation disposing of the Oregon land grant case, his advocacy of the 'railro.id's cause and his eleventh-hour ;. support of the Chamberlain bill, after the other Oregon congressmen had ably championed it, - again demon- . strates his ' unfitness and incapacity lor the position . For the first time in some years there is a chance to get rid of this sanctimonious incubus who prates for . prohibition and votes against national prohibition, talks and who brassily . claims credit for work done by. tile delegation while he marked time. Mark V. Weatherford, of a pio neer Oregon family, a brilliant, en ergetic young attorney of Albany, op poses Mr. Hawley. He' is clean, on . the level, a good speaker, a ready debater, a hard worker and will be heard from in Washington. Though Mr. Weatherford is we" known in the Willamette valley, he is bnt little known in Southern Ore gon. He is a graduate of the Oj A. C. and of Ann Arbor, taking the highest Sionors. He stands well in his own community as a progressive, enter prising citiren of high ideals, and will make good if given a chance. Oregon is a progressive state, but ' represented in congress by a reao tioirary and stand-patter whose ideal of statesmanship is Uncle Joe Can non,, whose henchman "and camp fol lower he has always been. Of little influence under the old regime, when '- his faithfulness to the interests was awarded by an occasional slice of pork, he is without, prestige in the -(regressive present. . Though Hawley has represented 1 Oregon for many terms, he has never fathered any legislation worth while. ' His name adorns no statutes. The halls of congress never resound with his oratory. His name is unheard of in the press dispatches. His standing is that of unnoticed mediocrity. . .. BEN LINDSEY. . His endorsement of the president: "Hon. Woodrow Wilson, Washing ton, D. C. . "For many years a member of the National Child Labor Committee fa voring a Federal child labor bill abol ishing child slavery, and as a recent member of the National Executive Committee of the Progressive party, I wish heartily to congratulate you on the passage of the Keating Child Labor bill. Your splendid attitude on this question and willingness to change from your former position with the states' right Democrats or Federal or National control, when it becomes Slearly apparent that the best method to put an end to certain evils or advance certain rights, should be sufficient proof to wavering Pro gressives that the Democratic patty : a willing as the Republican party in proper, cases, to put the National welfare above state considerations. As an ardent advocate of a national wo man's suffrage amendment, I am con vinced that the majority of the Dem ocratic, congressmen will eventually favor , such a measure, as they now have passed a National Child Labor law. The fine constructive legislation of your administration strongly ap peals to me' as a progressive, and while I am a non-partisan candidate for juvenile judge here when it comes to National issues in this campaign I feel it my duty as well as my pleas ure as a Progressive to assure you of my cordial support. ' "(Signed) BEN B. LINDSEY." PURE CIDER VINEGAR Will de liver in city at 25c a gallon. C. R. . Widmer, Home 2538. a!7tf MISFITS Why isn't Albany doing something to get Mmc. Schutiiann-Heink to lo cate near Albany She is looking for an Oregon farm. Dallas was the first town to secure a visit from the Mine. Getting her for a resident would be a high C accomplishment. With the great demand for bot tlings for lobanberry juice comes the demand also for a bottling factory. Why send east for bottles at a big freight charge when they could be easily made in Oregon. It has been discovered that short skirts make women look shorter and men "longer. . One hundred years from now the churches will be going it alone just the same. So long as hairs are split over non essentials they will never get togeth er. . No Respecter of Persons. While Deputy Sheriff Wilkins was putting up a big sign at the Four Corners warning people with auto mobiles to go slow through the town, he met with a funny accident by fall ing off the sign in front of an auto mobile and getting both legs broke and his shoulder badly crushed. The automobile ran over him before it could stop. Freedona (W Va.) Chronicle. One on Misfits.
