Some of the best editorials come from the people. Here is one in the Portland Journal over the signature. E. W. Eastman: . I am a Republican, I suppose, for I have registered that way, and I be lieve in -a protective tariff that equal ires the difference between the stan dard of living in this country and that in the country exporting goods into this country. - But in 1912 at the primaries I voted for Robert LaFollette, and he was de - feated at the primaries; so I voted for Wilson. I shall vote for Wilson again this fall. And I would change my poli tics as fast as elections came around if I considered I was changing for the better. President Wilson has been an ex cellent president, I admire him for his convictions and his broad vision. Roosevelt is for America, but Wilson is for the whole world. He has a 'broader conception of the rights of men than any president since Lincoln. 'Wilson is sympathetic, kind and gen erous. He is not tied down to a be lief in Americanism right or wrong. Some people think America should be upheld whether she is right or wrong. These are the kind of people who ean't understand why a Republican should vote for a Democrat or a Dem ocrat for a Republican. There is some talk and criticism against him on account of his convic tions regarding the Panama canal free tolls. Some narrow, contracted Americans thought just because we built the canal we ought to have a monopoly of it and give the coastwise Shipping a "rebate." But President Wilson held that the canal should be open to all at the same price, paying according to tonnage. This is broad ness of vision.' " Hughes criticizes the whole admin istration's accomplishments. He says everything was done wrong. Our Mexican policy was wrong; so was our foreign policy across the waters; so was every move President Wilson made. He says the Republican party is the only agency that can do things correctly. He says the republican par ty is our only salvation. Any sensible voter knows better than this. Now Hughes wouldn't be so bad, but horrors! Look at the company he is in. Smoot is for him. Boss Barnes is for him. Murray Crane is for him. Penrose is for him, and if you can find a standpatter, political boss, ward politician,., trust magnate or Wall street sympathizer that isn't for him, I will quit. And on the other hand, all these parasites are against Wilson. "There's a reason." " o - A NARROW CAMPAIGN.' Eugene Guard: The efforts of Charles E. Hughes to discredit ; the Wilson administration by singling out two or three texts, has fallen pretty flat so far as its apparent effect on the people in those sections of the .country he has visited is concerned. The Republican nominee has been crying "Mexico, Mexico, Mexico," and has attempted to resurrect the tariff issue.-On the real accomplish .mcnts of the Wilson administration the enactment of more progressive legislation, vitally affecting the peo ple's welfare, than in the previous forty years he has been silent. As president of the United States Woodrow Wilson is now urging a tariff commission law taking the tariff out of politics politics out of the tariff and regulating it on scien tific business principles. Those who - have been obstructing the president's efforts in this direction are the ad herents of Mr. Hughes. They : arc making a desperate effort to keep the tariff in politics at least until after the November election. The demand for non-partisan treatment of the -tariff comes from, the people. In the ivery near future, they are going to win. Before the close bf .another four years, the tariff will no longer be the catspaw of the politician, even though Charles E. Hughes should be elected president and should continue to in sist on partisan treatment of the tar iff question. Mr.' Hughes' speeches have been very limited in thcir-scope. lie has touched but few acts of the Wilson administration. It is quite probable that the administration has made some mistakes, but in the main its work stands as a great constructive record. MISFITS Republican papers openly boast of their candidate being endorsed by the trusts and monopolies, which they call big business. A Washington dispatch reads: "That Charles E. Hughes, is making a weak campaign is the opinion al most universally expressed in Wash ington." Madame Schumann-Heinke, the world's best alto singer, it is said will buy a .Willamctet valley farm, and make it her home. Welcome here, old girl. A lc check signed by Uncle Sam. has been received at Salcin. It's all the same, small or big. to US. When a young man with an auto delivery wagon took his second load of eggs to the depot, accompanied by a couple of young ladies a railroad man remarked: "I see you. brought chickens with your eggs this time." Say,. Charlie, what about those ten questions by those leading thir.-y-seven Americau writers? They are men not to be snubbed! 'A Brilliant Conductor. Coos Bay Harbor: ', Prof. J. F. Grnbbs relates an interesting experi ence with a conductor who has charge of a local train between Portland and Cottage Grove. Prof. Grubbs handed him his return ticket properly stamp ed North Bend and after reading it over carefully, said there must be some mistake. "I have never heard of North Bend, where is it?" asked the conductor. "North Bend is the best town in the best county in Oregon arid is on Coos Bay," said Prof. Grubbs, whereupon the conductor ac cepted the ticket without further coin- Pure .
