Isadore Jacobs, a prominent busi ness man who is leading the Inde pendent movement in California, has sent a communication to Woodrow Wilson Independent League, 280 Madison Avenue, New York, in which he says that the non-partisan move ment is just as strong in the northern part of California as in the southern end of the state. "Each day," said Mr. Jacobs, "we are getting letters from old time Republicans and Progressives assert ing that they will work and Vote for Wilson and that it is their purpose to attend the conference which is to be held in San Francisco, August 5, and whoop it up in true western style. Mr. Jacobs says the majority of the Progressives in' California will be for President Wilson. As an indication of the type of busness men who are heading the Wilson Progressive movement in California, the following is quoted from Mr. Jacob's message: "A permanent Progressive organi zation has been effected in' San Fran cisco. Its officers are: President, Joseph S. Thompson, president of the Pacific Electric com pany, of San Francisco; secretary, L. A. Ireland, of the Mysell-Rollins Co.; Eugene Smith, president of the Mon arch Oil Company, and of the Eugene Smith Company, is a member of the executive committee, and is out in the state actively organizing Progressives to work for Mr. Wilson. The move ment is being financed in California by local contributions." CRITICISM OLD GAME. : Militarist attacks upon President Wilson's foreign policy have elicited the following anecdote as a parallel, from a correspondent in "The New Republic. General Palmer, who records the story, was talking to President Lin coln at the White House in 1865: "I said: 'Mr. Lincoln, if I had known at Chicago that this great re bellion was to occur, I would not have consented to go to a one-horse town like Springfield, and take a one-horse lawyer, and make him president" Mr. Lincoln pushed the barber from him, turned the chair, and said in an excited manner: 'Neither would I, Palmer. If we had a great man for the presidency, one who had an in flexible policy and stuck to it, this rebellion would have succeeded, and the Southern Confederancy would have been established. All that I have done is, that I have striven to do my duty today, with the hope that when . tomorrow comes, I will be ready for it!" - ,. PRESIDENTIAL BETTING. From the New York Morning Tel egraph (Ind.): : Frenzied efforts at retrenchment are being made by per sons in Wall Street who, during the past several days have been betting on Hughes for the presidency. What causes this trend is not definitely known.' Former Hughes backers yesterday were striving in vain to place their money on Wilson, asking 2 to 1, he odds they gave themselves when on the other side of the fence. Evidently Hughes is going back, for Wall street sentiment is a barometer by which elections may be gauged. On paper Hughes is still the favor ite but only on paper. At odds of 6 to 5, it is virtually impossible to place money on him. Broker McQuadc, a curb operator, has $25,000 he would like to bet on Wilson at odds of 6 to 5, but the Republicans are not in betting mood. HERE'S ONE. Accident or crime, that big New York explosion was a terrific affair, a foretaste of what real war is. So far as the big munition makers are concerned they do not have the sympathy of the masses very much anyway, as there is a strong sentiment that they are corralling a good deal of the money of the world, and a lit tle thing like a few millions will hard ly be felt.
