Established in 1865. SATURDAY, JULY 29, 1916. SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGHTS. The principal thing about the Eu ropean war is the fact that the sec ond anniversary of it is just here this Saturday night. Looking back at the awful murderfest one is almost para lyzed at the totals presented. The cost in money: $49,350,000,000. Great Brit tain, though making a very poor showing, is credited with the most, $13,000,000,000, with Germany next, $12,500,000,000. Russia's, iguiis arc 8 billions, France over 7 billions, Aus tria 6 billions, etc The average daily cost has been $67,510,295. At the pres ent time it is $100,000,000 a day. . In killing Russia leads with 1,200, 000, 2,500,000 wounded, 2,000,000 miss ing. Germany is next with 900,000 killed, 1,900,000 wounded and 150,000 missing. France's total is about the same; Austria's nearly as many. Great Britain fead ing in expense, is Credited with only 160,000 killed, 450, 000 wounded and 70,000 missing. A total given for all the countries is. 3,805,000 killed; 7370,000 wounded! 3,680,000 missing, making a total of 15,355,0000. (Aren't , those figures enough to make one dizzy? The dark ages could not offer a greater example of brutality. " The Mexican border is quiet enough for the jingoists to become nervous, and we may look for some disturb ance almost any day. Billy Hearst is becoming very impatient, according to a San Francisco paper. In congress this week about seven hundred million dollars has been ap propriated for national defense, at least so far as the senate is concern ed. This is a good deal, but it is small compared with what we would be ex pending if we had been thrust into the maelstrom of war itself. In Europe that much is being spent every seven . days. - i Some day there is going to have to - be a readjustment of conditions in the world that will make the old globe crackle. The entire world is watching things at Baltimore anxious to see what the Deutschland does. Almost universal ly the sentiment is in favor of the success of the expedition home, simp ly because the world loves bravery, and such daring excites admiration. Something that makes one stand up and take notice is the spending of $5,000 by a Salem firm for advertis ing Loganberry juice in a single issue of a periodical, the Saturday Evening Post, that much being paid for one page one time; but the Post has over two million readers, hence the invest ment is undoubtedly a good one. A Cottage Grove man has gone to the' supreme court over a $5 case. Wonder where the fool killer is up that way. But the whole European war 'was started just as foolishly, and up to the present time it has cost about $49,000,000,000.
