SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGHTS. In the European war the Germans on the west have gradually bent back, and yet the progress of the Allies is very little, hardly enough to frighten the Teutons, It is said the Kaiser pul in an appearance in order to know himself the exact situation. On the east side the advantage has been with the Russians, who havi erected a tremendous machine whicl is pushing steadily forward, gradually mowing the Austrians down. The modern war has developed ii. a striking manner into machine work and the soldier has become a wonder ful Dart of it. Though not a city builder like a state university or a great agricultur- . al college, it fills in splendidly in lo cal development.
