FAITH IN PEOPLE. - A correspondent in the Portland Journal saya: Yesterday a Republican friend ask ed me how I coull" be so confident that Wilson will again be elected. 1 answered him by saying that it was because I stilt had faith in the good sense of ' the American people and their ability to discriminate between right and wrong; th.-.t the sober and mature judgment of the thinking vot er would not allow him to be led astray after false gods, albeit one of "such gods had long been a popular idol of many people; that the great balance of voting power is held in this country today by men and wo men who are not so partisan as to blindly follow any leader or set of leaders, or to take their word as to all political matters, and that it was this class of voters who will reelect Mr. Wilson, knowing that in him they will have a safe and sane presi dent, a man who will do for all Americans the best that it is possible . for mortal man to do, and one who looks to higher power for guidance and counsel in every act I answered that, also, before November many voters will have awakened to a full realization of the trick that has been played upon them by the old stand- pat gang in the - nomination of Hughes; that it was not the people who really named him for president, but the old Ting that Roosevelt made such a pretense of fighting, after wrecking the party of really honest men and women who believed in him and his advocacy of certain reforms, reforms by now enacted into laws by the greatest man of the age. Wood row Wilson; 'that the voters of Ore gon, especially, will also begin to re- member that the Oregonian, Ralph Williams, Charley Fulton, and othersH of the old guard, dp not advocate the election of men unless they know they can handle them. They would prefer to go down to defeat, bide their time and be sure of .the ground on which they stand. That these and other eye-openers are bound to come, . I assured my anxious inquirer, and so I remain confident in the be lief that right will triumph in November. WONT FOLLOW. A New York dispatch suggests that the progressives arc not being herded into line at all according to program, and that Roosevelt's big club has evi dently been shattered to pieces: Effort by the Roosevelt-Perkius-Flynn combination to deliver the Pro gressive vote to Hughes is- meeting with sad disappointments in states of the east and middle west New York, because of the import ance of its electoral vote next fall,' is attracting particular atetntion, and the- Progressives there are not follow ing orders. They are flourishing in a great tangle, with the New York county committee leading the fight to preserve the party and prevent in dorsement of Hughes. The governorship is also at stake, and it promises to play a large part in the national campaign. Governor Whitman, who is to be' renominated by the Republicans, is not believed to be particularly strong with the mass es, and his friends arc plainly alarmed by the turn events have taken, as his weakness also makes weakness for Hughes, who was nominated' by . Whitman at the national convention. The Progressive committee of New York county has gone on record with a strong endorsement of Samuel Sca- . bury, a Oemocrat, for governor. It appears at this time that Seabury will be the Democratic nominee. He is popular with the people because of his progressive and humanitarian views. He is the sort of candidate to attract ; the progressive and independent vot ers. With the Progressives tendering him their support the outlook for Whitman and Hughes is all smeared over with dinginctt, Th Progressive state committee will meet July 22, at which time Roosevelt and Perkins hope to (ore through a resolution indorsing Hughes. Baiubridge Colby, who nom inated Roosevelt at the Chicago con- vention, is leading the opposing forc es. He believes Wilson a befctr Pro- grcssive than Hughes and Seabury o betcr Progressive than Whitman MISFITS Kuropalkin is back in the slaughter game. . . .' ' Both sides continue to gain accord ing to their own accounts. It is rare that one of 'em ever ad mits much of a dclcat. Pete D'Arcy says the Irish-Americans arc r-ll right. Correct, Pete. Binger Bugge is .the name of a Portland man. Why those last two letters? ' Said to be the happiest men in the world: Those Dcutschlanders when they arrived at Baltimore. Let's see how they feel when they get back to Berlin. Everybody hopes they make it, for the world loves a doer. The person who docs a thing for the first time is bound to rcceine the praise of the world. A Green Bay. Coos Bay, how are you? Oh, I love you, yes I do. Years have passed since I have trod O'er your green and velvet -sod. But I'm l.ere and I thank God, Coos Bay. Record,. Before and After. Cor.
