This has been a week full of ex citement for the United States. Just on the ragged edge of war with Mex ico, there has been much concern over the matter. The week-end sees a sil ver lining to it. Nevertheless, there is a strong sentiment that a big readjust - ment of affairs in Mexico is necessary and that eventually the United States will have to look after it. The policy of this country, though, is to mind its own business, and not to interfere in the affairs of other nations unless cir cumstances absolutely compel it. With perverted ideas of their strength and peculiar notions of justice, the Mexi cans are a hard people to get along with; but it is the duty of a big nation like the United States to keep its head and not get mad at everything thai comes up. A small fiste of a dog may bark at the heels of a Newfoundland an aggravating thing; but the New foundland ' generally considers the source and lets the cur bark. If he does do anything, one good shake of the jaws is all that is necessary to set tle his fisteship. The masses do not want war with Mexico or any other country. They are solidly against war. But if war : is necessary then they are for push ing things with the vim of a star foot ball player. The European war is in statu quo, ii you know what that is. If there is any advantage it will take a genius to fig ure it out with reliability. Just now a great game is being played to make it tropical for the enemy of the pother side, wherever possible, so as to draw strength to meet the offensive. Both sides are doing it with varying results. In the meantime about fifty million dollars is being wasted daily and this side of the world is wondering how long this can last, and when it ends what will be left to start anew with. Albany has a new industry, a logan berry juice factory. In view of the de mand for a refreshing drink to take the place of intoxicating liquors, this factory is something to be commend ed and supported. People are bound to have drinks of some kind that re fresh. Water is a splendid things, and some people con drink nothing else; but the masses like other things, things with special tastes to them, and it is doubtful if anything has been found that has more pep than the lo ganberry. - ' Another early prospect is the re starting of the furniture factory, an industry that will do much to attract attention to the city, and be at least a . stepping-stone in the city's upward progress. 5 Albany cheese is now on the mar ket. There is nothing better that comes here, hence there can be no ex cuse not to use it. . By the way, whatever is made in Albany, give it a hearty support, par ticularly where it fills the bill, and measures up to competitors. THE PICKENS HOUSE. MISFITS Certainly the president is showing a generalship that commands the re spect of the reasonable peoplo. The jingo sheets arc greatly dis turbed about the U. S. losing its rep utation is the most powerful country in the world. It is not material what the greasers of Mexico think about us. As much as the reprobates deserve a whipping, this country does well to use its best endeavors to keep its hands off Mexico as a nation. Real greatness consists not in go ing to war; but in keeping out of it if possible with honor. David Star Jordan, the pacificist, will be remembered after the Billy hearsts have been forgotten. ' Great is Pat McArthur. He discov ered that Hughes' vote in the prima ries was twice as much as Wilson's vote in the primaries, something of 'absolutely no significance. The Dem ocratic primary vote was merely a nominal affair. Wonder if Pat has noticed that in every straw vote taken in Oregon, Wilson has had more than Hughes. That has a real significance to it. The masses are for Wilson, and will not be jingled or jingoed down. ' His Uncle SamueL (As seer, by a Polk county man. Rev. G. H. Bennett.)
