(By Ray Sunnard Baker. I have five good reasons for sup porting Wilson for the presidency; 1. I am for Wilson because I trust him. , He is the steadiest, safest, clearest thinking leader in public life today. In the world crisis he has not been sum- J peded by extremists of either type, neither by Roosevelt nor by Bryan. He has acted with that imperturbability and wisdom in the midst of unparal leled events, which are the true marks of the highest leadership. In our diffi cult relationship with Germany he got what he set out to get; he got it be cause it was right, and while main taining the honor of the nation, kept us out of war. ' 2. I am for Wilson because he is a genuine progressive. . Progressivism with Wilson is a faith, not a policy. The nation to him is a living force, not bound by prejudices, partisanship or theories, but moving steadily forward to meet the problems of a new time. There had been years of talk of progressive- legislation. Wil . son welded his divided party together and actually placed on the statute books during the first half of his ad ministration a remarkable body of real progressive laws. 3. I am for Wilson because he has the new democratic and co-operative view of international relationships. He has substituted for the evil and greedy policy of "dollar diplomacy" in our relationships with South or Cen tral America a new and friendly spirit. Pan-Americanism under him has ceased to be a mere name and has be come a living thing. I believe it to be his supreme ambition to make Am erica an instrument in extending the same spirit throughout the world.. 4. I am for Wilson because he has been tested and tried in the fire of the greatest events. I know what he is and what he can do. I know that he is master of the situation and has han dled the nation's affairs upon whole with great wisdom, patience and cour- age. More than any other American he is familiar with every crook and turn of our delicate national relationships in this troubled time. Why should 1 think for a moment of substituting for such a leader an untried man, without - experience in these great national af fairs, of whose views I am uncertain? We know Wilson and what he has done; all we can know of any other leader is what he says he will dcr. 5. I am for Wilson because I believe ' him to possess the clearest under standing of the true American spirit of any man now in public life. He understands its historical origins and inspirations; his whole life has been devoted to the study of American institutions. No. series of books are superior to his as wise commentaries upon American government. He un derstands also the American spirit in its contemporary expression in public opinion; in each great crisis during the last two years, when he has acted, the great mass of the American people have been soundly with him and be hind him. Therefore I trust him be- yond any other leader to meet the stormy events which are before us, and to meet them with the true Amer ican spirit. vVe are embarked for the first time in our history upon the un known and tempestuous seas of world politics, but we know that with Wil son at the helm, the Ship of State will not only go forward on a true course, but will be safely, patiently, courage ously navigated. S. can do it; but the greatest bravery is in not fighting when one feels like it. That shows the kind of neighbors we have just south of us. The Fili pinos are in a high state of civilization compared with them, and even Eu rope has a few redeeming features. Some Oakland. For months that paper has urged the president to send troops into -Mexico, and now that this action has been aken, the Oregonian prints a cartoon showing a company of soldiers -nnrching to Mexico, a mother sitting in a chair ( a chair by the roadside, mind you) weeping, while a hand is writing on the horizon above the sol liers, "He Got Us Into War." July 12th, 1916 for the construction of an eicjit inch lateral sewer beginning at the lamp hole at the Eastern eud of the lateral sewer now in place in the San tiam Road and extending in a south easterly direction along said Santiam Road a distance of 3.X) feet, in tlack leman's Heir's 1st Addition to the City of Albany, Oregon. Said sewer construction to be made in accordance with the character and ordinances of said City of Albany and the plans, specifications and estimates of the City Engineer on file in the office of the Recorder of said city, where the plans may be seen and speefications and estimates obtained. Bids will be opened at 7:30 o'clock p. m. July 12, 1916.
