President Wilson did rigfit in wait ' ing as long as possible before invading Mexico. The occasion has never aris en for this country Jo. attack Mexico until the present time. It has occurred : now. Our country did i ight in follow ing after illa after ho had crossed our border and killed innocent citi zens, and it did right in keeping ti:e soldiers in Mexico until the object had been accomplished. Had Carranza ' kept his word and used reasonable cf '.' fort himself t(J capturc'Villa, and not ' only to capture liim, but to see that the safety of our people along -the border was assured, there might not ' v have been occasion tor- the United States to have kept its soldiers ir Mexico; but lie did nothing of the kind. Instead he retarded the effort of our soldiers to secure the bandit and his men. Carranza has shown himself to be unreliable, not to be trusted, and must be dealt with accordingly. The care ful, level-headed course taken by the president commends itself to people generally, regardless of politics. Poli- " ticians only attack, because they musl have material for a campaign; but the people appreciate the manner in which he -has kept this country from war. and as well his course in dealing with Mexico. If war with Mexico is ever ' - necessary, it will be congress that de clares it, and back of congress are the . people. ' ...... ! ALBANY HADE EATABLES. When trading think of the .things that are made in Albany. If Albany made things deserve a good trade else where, they deserve-the home trade also. We have a number of things here along the eating line that de serve the hearty support of our peo ple: , Albany flour and Albany bread; coirTectionery. Try boosting Albany confectionery. Tr yboosting Albany made eatables. A PAPER'S THREAT. News: Over at North Bend the daily paper issued there is face to face with the question again of whether to continue publication, or quit while the quitting is good, and before the sur plus is all exhausted. In order to bring this squarely to the attention of the business men and citizens of the city, the publisher announces that un less1 the business men ign up a rea sonable amount of advertising space , for the balance of the year, and he can secure 500 paid in advance sub scriptions by the first day of July, he will close his affairs and seek a new field of operations. IMPROVING A CITY. The following from the Scio News ought to set people there to thinking: South Main street from the bridge is being put on grade by the wide awake property owners on that side, and-paving is talked of strongly. They are out to show the people on the north side of the creek how the town would look if the streets were im proved. It will look nice to see. the main business part of town a mud hole next winter, and the south end of the street extending to the resi dence section, looking like a city street POLICE ! And here's another to Trooper Harris, whose flight from Carrizal, a writer says, equals "The Arab's Farewell to His Horse." The U. S. has been mighty patient with Mexico, as a big country should he with a small one, almost helpless, hardly competent to run its own busi ness. A former U. of O. football star was rejected for service in the Mexican war because he couldn't pass the phy sical examination! - The rep. papers are not soaking T. R. quite as fiercely as they were a few months ago. Just the Man We Have. Medford Sun: 5What the American people want is strong and aggressive leadership. They want a man in the white house who. knows what he thinks and isn't afraid to say it. We hear people wonder if we are ever soing to have summer this year. Several days ago after the dust had been flying a few days, it was declared the farmers were praying for rain, ir the crops would be ruined. How difficult" it is to please every body. v Now read the following, handed the Democrat by " an Albany man. It is is interesting as a novel: ' It w-as just one hundred years ago this coming summer, in 1816, to be ex let, that Vermont had no summer. Ten inches of snow fell in June of that year and people were frozen to death. Overcoats and mittens were worn all through the summer months, ind there were even a number of sui tes due fo the fear that the sun was :ooling off, or that judgment day was ipproaching. An account of that remarkable sea son was printed some years ago in the Concord (N. H.) Monitor as being the larrativc of the "nonagenarian James Winchester of Vermont," who says: "I remember the year that was win ter from one end of it until the other, ind when the weather was so severe in June that a terrible snowstorm pre 'ajlcil on the 17th of that month, and .jeoplc were frozen to death in the month .of roses. I was'14 years old then and lived in Vermont, where the memorable season was at its, very worst The wind during June, July and August, 1816, was continuously from the north, and it blew fiercely and cold. Farmers wore heavy over coats and mittens while about their york every day during these months. Ice half an inch thick formed in July. ')Ut in August t froze an inch and more. There was a heavy snowstorm on August 30. There was not a green -hing to be seen anywhere. It may truly be said that in Vermont, at least, the year 1816 had neither spring, sum mer nor autumn. Sealed bids will be received by the Council of the City of Albany, Ore gon, until 7:30 o'clock p. in. July 12th, 1916 for the construction of an eic,ht inch lateral sewer beginning at the . lamp hole at the Eastern end of the lateral sewer now in place in the San tiam Road and extending in a south easterly direction along said Santiam Road a distance of JJ0 feet, in Hack leman's Heir's 1st Addition to the City of Albany, Oregon. Said sewer construction to be made in accordance with the character and ordinances of said City of Albany and the plans, specifications and estimates of the City Engineer on file in the office of the Recorder of said city, where the -plans may he seen and ipecfications and estimates obtained. Bids will be opened at 7:30 o'clock p. m.-july 12, 1916. No proposal or bid will be consid ered unless accompanied by a certi fied check payable to the City of Al bany in an amount equal to five per :cnt of the aggregate bid to be for feited as fixed and liquidated damages '.n case the bidder neglects or refuses :.. enter into a contract and provide an approved bond in the sum of 5100.00 for the faithful performance of ;he work within ten days after notifi cation of awarding of contract to such bidden.
