PRESIDENT WILSON. , The Democratic party goes before the American people with a candidate " whose wisdom and ability in a period of unparalleled storm and stress enti tle him to support in the name of a patriotism which dwarfs all narrow partisanship. His record of achieve ment has won the applause of his friends, the admiration of his political foes, and the gratitude of the nation at targe. . He has giverMhe country a currency system which on the eve of universal upheaval enabled finance and industry to stand unshaken.. . What the condi tions would have been under Republi can rule may easily be imagined by re calling the disaster of 1907. He has proved himself a better pilot in a storm than the Republicans in an era , of profound tranquility. . ... Under his guidance a Democratic congress has written upon the statute books a tariff law which has brought prosperity to every class of the Amer ican people. ' The familiar shibboleths of the Old Guard, the prophecies of impending calamity have become the butt of mockery and derision in the light of cold facts. The noisy fore- - casts of evil are drowned in the song of the harvest and the hum of the loom. ... . .y He -has passed unscathed through a crisis in international affairs that - would have seared the soul and para lyzed the mind of of a weaker charac ter. Charged with the welfare . of a hundred million people, .whose des tiny was exposed to all the cross-cur rents which blew from the earth's four corners, he has maintained peace while giving the world a new and inspiring-vision of the moral grandeur of the nation, jeatons of its honor, but devoted to the interests of mankind. In the highest sense he is the em bodiment of a splendid Americanism. The best traditions of the republic are wrought into the very fibre of .his be ing. He loves peace well enough to fight for it, if need be. He has made it doubly clear to all lie nations of the New and Old World that the United States covets nothing which is not le gitimately its own. In trying ordeals he has shown that the' American peo ple ask nothing and concede nothing. s except to work out their own destiny under the free institutions which are their peculiar heritage. But with it all, the candidate of the Democratic party is no visionary, groping in clondland. He is a-stir in a world of realities. He has taken measures which insure the safety of his country. If, out of this welter , of .' war, this riot of mad passions, should come a menace to the liberty, peace and prosperity we enjoy, the forces he has marshalled with an unvaunting but determined efficiency will be ready at hand, vaiting only to be quickened into action by the word of command. Strong, alert, tried and approved by experience, he has won the confidence of the people, and this will be their verdict at the polls. . THE PARAMOUNT ISSUE. The Republicans at Chicago endeav ored to raise definite issues upon which the campaign might turn. They .-. failed. Search and ponder the Repub lican platfrom and you will not find either a single paramount issue or a group of issues representing diverg ence of political thought or principle which any but the most blindly parti san mind will accept as such. The Democrats at St. Louis have - - raised definite issues and a paramount issue. The latter is simply this: Shall Woodrow Wilson, who has crystalized the progressive thought of the past ten years into legislative performance t who has piloted this nation's foreign relations ably and successfully through the most tremendous crisis in rthe world's history be sustained in his great work. - MISFITS Uncle Stun will have a hard old job making Mr. Greaser good It is is not a question of licking him, it is one of regulation. Victor Murdock, whom the Progres sives turned down as nominee lor president at La Grande, and who is to speak at Chautauqua here, has figured out that the Pacific coast, and particu larly Oregon, will be the line of at tack after the present European war is over. Gee. that's mean of Murdock to come out here and try to frighten us. As a matter of fact, when the pres ent war is over the probability is that the world will have had enough war for a long time. Anyway, selecting Oregon as the special line of attack beats a movie. Every straw vote yet has been for Wilson. One on a G. N. train the other day was 49 for Wilson and 39 for Hughes. . It means the masses are for Wilson, and the more the big yellow, journels yell at him the more his majority will increase. People are no longer going :o be frightened over bugaboos. In one of the funny pages of a paper s a Mr. Suburb who has an awful time keeping hired girls. His atten tion is called to the Portland way. Monday at that ' city Eldon Ester- Srook shot M. A. Powell because he was going to take his housekeeper lway to marry her. Worry ,not work, shortens life. The fewer -flics, the more health. Albany's system of street cleaning is healthy one. Back it up with backyard cleanliness- Never allow decayed vegetables and ld trash around. Tlies can't live without food. Did you know that the death rate by typhoid fever has been cut in two in fifteen years. Brains has done it. It is being realized more and more that it is as much the business of phy sicians to prevent disease as it is to :ure it. .
