Salem journal: Congressman Dill, of Washington, recently sent a list of questions to his constituents, who live in Spokane and in the region round about. About 12,500 answers were received. Of these 6412 were for doubling the army and navy ap propriations. But this sentiment was not uniform. The city of Spokane voted in the proportion of .3 to 2 for the increase, while the outlying dis tricts voted nearly 3 to 2 against it Of seven rural counties only one vot ed for the increase. Even in Spokane county the farmers gave a "no" ma jority. In bis second and third questions Congressman Dill asked for light on President Wilson's Mexican and Eu ropean policies both, whatever their weaknesses, being manifestly at tempts to keep the peace. Here city and country roughly agreed; the vote favoring the present Mexican policy was more than 3 to 1, and that fav oring the European policy a little more than 2 to 1. , . Congressman Dill's fourth question related to compulsory military serv ice. He included as favoring this all those who approved of the Swiss or Australian systems., A Spokane news paper had been vigorously preaching compulsion, and had denounced Dill as a suspected pacifist. But the cause of compulsion lost, even in Spokane, and the total vote was 3 to 2 against it. ' . , The fifth question, relating to the federalization of the National Guard, received an affirmative answer in the ratio of 2 to 1. The government ship purchase till had a majority of 4 to 1, and withdrawal from the Philip pines was urged by a majority of 3 to 2. Congressman Dill concluded, as well he might, that his constituents were in favor of preparedness, if it were legitimately for defense. But his figures strongly suggest, first that the country . districts are not afire with military enthusiasm; sec ond, tbat such unquestioned popular support as "preparedness" has rests on the understanding that it is to be honestly for defense, and is not for the protection of imperial or com mercial adventures in foreign seas. If there is betrayal on this point and one loud-voiced, heavily-moneyed group aims at nothing less the militaristic tower of jewels will come crashing to the earth, a ruin of lath and plaster. The majority of Ameri cans clearly are neither fools nor vil lains, and will not approve a foreign policy of foolishness or villainy, how ever disguised. NOT WEAK BUT STRONG. From the New York World: Ver mont Republicans in convention as sembled writhed in anguish over the ' "weak, vacillating, incompetent Dem ocratic party." The "weak, vacillating, incompetent Democratic party" is the party that enacted the greatest banking and cur rency law the country ever had after the Republican' party had failed at the job; the party that reformed the tariff after the Republican party had mud dled the work; that created a trade commission after the Republican par ty shirked its duty; that has doubled the size of the United States army and made provision for general mili tary training; that has framed the greatest navy bill in the history of the country; that is preparing to take the tariff completely out of partisan politics and to rehabilitate the mer chant marine; that has kept the Unit ed States out of war and maintained the honor of the nation by the pro rses of peace. The "weak, vacillating, incompetent Democratic party" lias done more for the country in three years than the Republican party did in sixteen years of continuous power. It is a record for which the Republican party has no parallel since the Civil War. MISFITS Some fighter T. R. Prospects of about the lircst cam paign yet. Xone'of the biir narties dare tackle the endorsement of prohibition yet. Nevertheless the Republicans have taken an iceberg in for vice president, which is some tackle. It takes more than say to create harmony. Rv the wav this is a world of con- tpHltnn iuct now. It's in the air. not only in Europe; but in America, in different forms, including politics. Calling black white doesn't make it white. With sugar clear in the air straw berries never tasted better, and we have the best in the world. The farmers are for peace, but not at any price, for a more loyal lot of men never lived; but one backed by a reasonable expense, that shall not be a burden, in the securing. An Albany window dresser came pretty near getting into trouble by putting a square and a compass in his window during the Masonic grand lodge. By mistake he put the square above the compass, giving it an en tirely different meaning. The Ogden Cheerful Wigglcrs is the name of an Ogden dancing club. .vhose. name tells the story. There are times when people would do well to imitate a clam. A sample of yellow journalism was displayed in Portland when a paper plastered the front page with the words "Hughes Nominated," a day before he was actually nominated. He had simply been placed before the convention for nomination. There are different ways in the world of obtaining goods under false pretences. One of Mary Pickford's experienc es was being arrested by a policeman as a thief. She had taken refuge in an Italian store as a part of an act Moth Balls Liberated.. Klamath Herald: After a long hi bernation for many, a hibernations since the Elks' dance, the moth balls were carefully picked out of full dress suits and party gowns during the week, and last night some hundred and seventy odd souls- turned out to the opening of the Wiiitc Pelican for the summer season.
