IF NEED BE, I WILL DIE FOR ; MY COUNTRY. .?. fj MODERN FAKERY. . .( ' The Roosevelt demonstration was a sample of modern fakery. It was not a voluntary burst of enthusiasm; just an organized effort to make a big show of enthusiasm for the purpose of a stampede. It was therefore mere ly a matter ot physical endurance for the' Roosevelt followers to cause a noise for an hour and a half. It could easily , have been ;dono; longer. Any body of men through organization could make a demonstration that would last five hours or more, shift ing the applause; but it would be fak ery. This is so, not because for Roose velt, but because it was not a spoil taneous act; but an organized one, as evidenced by circumstances. MISFITS England doesn't seem to be able to have many spies in Germany. The wireless is a great institution for conveying news. Speculation is the order these days. How did it happen. Strawberries are getting down to the canning price. An inmate of Sing Sing prison has written a poem that is attracting a good deal of attention. It tells about a conference of the fish of the sea, the shark, strake, pilot fish, and others, who endeavored .to find out whose beak had run into a vessel sinking it. Following was the result: The Shark hac? just begun to weap. when shadows crept o erncau. And down there came a submarine to nestle 'midst the dead: A snaky thing so fearsome built; its fang was dripping red. The Cuttle-fish, the Adder-snake, the '" blind Sea-serpents white, The Squirting-squid, the Killer-whale. thev all recoiled in fright. For deep within the Submarine they heard a voice recite: I am the thing. Ya-Ya Ya-Ya! the captaiu of the Pit; The slinking, sneaking Submarine, whose picric fang has slit At two mile range, this fast mail boat; so dring to me: Porsitl The tiny little Pilot-fish, he made a 7 crown of green, Placed it no the peeriscope to cap his ' snakeship. lean; And king of all the viper tribe they crowned the Submarine. :, Don't Lose Your Smile. I've thought at times, "Ok, what s the use The hand of fate is sure"; 've felt the stings of long abuse ..'
